1997 F150 AC Evaporator core replacment, need help please
First of all I have been reading the forum and this is a great website, thank you all for the info. I am a new member with a AC problem and i hope someone can help me out.
I have a 97 F150 and I am being told that the compressor is leaking and the Evaporator coils are leaking. Can anyone help out with info in evap replacment?
is there anything special about replacing the compressor I need to know, or is it pretty straight forward?
I assume it is the same as the heater core replacment?? since it is next to the heater core??
Do I need any special tools, how about the clips on the hoses do they need to be replaced?
I assume I should also replace the heater core at the same time since i will be in there.
I am a Aircraft mechanic and have plenty of tools, i just need some info on where to start.
thanks for the great website and the help!

The tools you'll need are a 7 & 8 mm sockets, various 1/4" drive extensions, A rightangle SKU-Driver, A battery powered screwdriver and the socket accessories for it.
The instructions are basiclly the same for heater and AC Coil replacement as far as dash removal.
When we install AC on the 97-04 f150 we are able to set the right side of the dash in the seat, driver side stays put and is the pivot point, loosen the HVAC case from the firwall but NOT remove the nuts, just screw them out to their ends and pull the case back enough to access the Evap coil or heatercore. Its about a 2-3 hour job IF you've done several.
I'd get a second opinion on the diagnosis, because its a lot of work if you aren't doing it on a regular basis.

hey zziggy thanks for the help,
what i have done is replaced the compressor and the manifold suction/discharge hose assy because the hose looks suspicisious at the pressure fittings where the hose ends are swedged to the rubber hose. the compressor was very oily and filthy in the front and all over the clutch like the front seal had gone in the compressor. The shop told me compressor and evap coils needed replaced. I am going to see if it holds a vacume and if it does then i will replace the accumulator/dryer and charge it up and be done. I have spent about 375.00 in parts so I way ahead of the 1500.00 i was quoted, if the vacume test fails then I will go for the evap coils possibly after i get a second opinion from a different shop.
IS it common for the evap coil to go out in 10 years on these trucks? I have a 82 Z28 with factory evap coils still going strong, seems early to fail in the F150. maybe i was going to be charged for the coils and they were going to change just the compressor and accumulator/drier??
I will let you know the outcome.
thanks again.
