A/C locked up, can it be bypassed?
My 1997 4.6L A/C compressor seized and the truck died.
Can I get a belt for a non A/C 4.6L and bypass the compressor? I read that the tentioner for the non A/C is ribbed and the A/C tentioner is smooth. If I can bypass the compressor, do I need to change out the tentioner to a ribbed wheel? |
If your complessor is locked-up, the clutch should still turn. Sounds like your clutch shorted and needs to be replaced. You should be able to get a shorter belt.

I have the NON AC tensioner and belts around here somewhere. $75 for both.
Your Compressors CLUTCH bearing must be bad, as a locked up compressor only causes problems when the AC is on. Unplug the Clutch Cycling switch on the Accumulator to keep the Compressor from engaging. |
Thanks
Thanks for the advice, I found a shorter belt will work, but I have to change out the tensioner to a ribbed type that pulls the other way
