A/C Clutch?
A/C Clutch?
98 f150 XLT 4.6 W VIN
I unplugged the plug from the compressor. While the engine was running and with A/C switch turned on, I used a test light and the test light came on.
SO...I have power at the plug going to the compressor but the clutch will not engage.
Should I replace the clutch? How difficult is it to replace?
BTW...does the compressor have something to do with the window defroster during the winter time? Just curious.

Have you checked the performance of the system? Put gauges on it to see how much frig is in it. When you put gauges on it to test also use a paper clip [bend it into a 'U' shape] to cross the connecter that goes to the low pressure cut off switch, it is attached to the dryer. Jumping the switch will engauge the compressor. If the compressor does not engauge tap the clutch with a screwdriver handle to make sure it isn't stuck. If the numbers a low you have a leak in the system that will need to be fixed before adding more frig.
If you have power to the clutch, the charge level is good enough to activate the compressor and the cycling switch is working.
Chances are, you just have an excessive clutch gap. Instructions abound in this forum on how to test and measure the gap and how to remove a shim if needed.
The compressor is ALWAYS enabled when the DEFROST mode is selected. See your owner's manual.
