weird ac problem

I did some searching and didn't find much that relates to my issue.

Hi guys, I have an 03 exped with front and rear air. Has always worked great. The air is ice cold! On our drive from TN to IA yesterday about 2 hrs into the drive the volume of air reduced coming from the vents. Even on full blast barely any air was coming out.

I pulled in for lunch, opened the glove box and got behind it, the door that moves from outside air to recirc air was moving fine.

So I turned on the ignition, no engine running and let the fans blow. The air stayed cold for about 2-3 minutes then I noticed a lot of water dripping out the drip hoses underneath the truck. After about 8 minutes the water pretty much stopped dripping and the air volume returned to normal.

I got back on the road and in about 90 minutes it slowly started to reduce and at 2 hours was nearly stopped again. I repeated the process of running the fans with engine not running and got the same results of a lot of water dripping out and air volume returned.

Is something freezing up and preventing airflow from coming out the vents? Any suggestions on how to repair this?

The front and rear systems both experienced this reduced air volume. The Expedition has a seperate rear air system.

Thanks guys!

Your evaporator is freezing up. If you have AC guages that would be a place to start to see whats going on with the system.
