Exclamation Losing over 1lb of freon a week

My a/c is losing that much or more in a week.I installed a can of dye freon and a half can of regular freon today. The outside temperature was 88*.My temperature gauge now reads 38* on max air, doors shut. The low side line even started condensating, where it connects at the compressor.I did notice the shrader valve leaking at the accumulator.I bought a a/c shrader valve tool and tightened it but stopped because I thought the valve was going to get screwed in too far.
I'm going to do as the directions say and wait 24-48 hrs before I check the system with a black light.Any suggestions or comments are very grateful!

Did you replace the valve or just tighten the old one? If you didn't replace the old one, I would replace it.

Probably that schrader valve, if not probably the condenser or compressor.

If you're losing a pound a week, I'd say check that thing pretty soon. If you're losing a pound a month, you might have to wait a week, but if you wait too long, that dye will get everywhere and you may be back at square one. Just give it a quick check...if you don't see anything, check it again later.

Remember that a leak in the evaporator has to run down (possibly thru the fins) & then out of the case to become visible at the firewall drain. But check the schrader valve & any other suspects with soapy water. It's much quicker than dye.

Thumbs up

I think I fixed it! Tightening the shrader valve must have done it.Its been 3 days now and my temperature gauge is still reading 38-40* at the vent.I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed!

Cool

Its official; my a/c is fixed! Tightening the shrader valve over a week ago did it.Temperature outside today was 84* and inside my truck at the vent was 38*!
