2002 Cabin Air Filter? (pics)

Hi all,

I have a 2002 KR Edition and I am trying to figure out if I have a cabin air filter.

I have attached (if I can do it correctly) some pics I took of the box under the glove box, where if I understand correctly, the filter would be located. Unfortunately, I don't have any tools to unscrew the screws you see in the pic at the moment (they are all packed away pending a move unpack).

From the official ford service manual, I gather that EVERY cabin filter was a dealer-installed option, and there is no info in the service manual about it. It says the dealer will supply the documentation, unfortunately I am the second owner, so if any such documents were provided, I don't have them.

Can anyone tell from the pictures if I have the cabin filter installed?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

[QUOTE=TallCowboy0614]I have a 2002 KR Edition and I am trying to figure out if I have a cabin air filter.

I'll tell you before someone else does, that darn near everything you can do or fix has been discussed in the forums already. The search feature can narrow it way down.
That being said, you need to pull that cover off to access the filter area, whether or not your duct work is set up for the filter. Here is a post of mine from years back:

The part numbers I have for the cabin air filter install are:

F65Z-19B736-AA Cabin filter cover
F65Z-19871-AA Cover bracket "A"
F65Z-19871-BA Cover bracket "B"
W701696-S421 Bracket mounting screw
N605758-S58 Cover mounting bolt

The cover and brackets ARE the same numbers included in the F65Z-18D477-AA Cabin air filter kit, which was obsoleted long ago. The screws and bolts are NOT the same as what came in the kit. Because Ford decided not to assign part numbers for the screws and bolts in the kit, I had to find suitable, albeit not exact, replacements.

Installation: Under the dash, below the glove box area, you will see a trapezoid shaped cover held in place by three screws. Remove the screws and cover to reveal the pre-fabbed duct work.

The brackets come tapped with 4MM holes. I searched the dealers hardware bins for 4MM bolts with either built-in or captured washers, but could find none. I opted to go up a size to 5MM bolts with built-in washers. To use these, you will need to drill the existing holes out with an 11/64 bit, and re-tap the holes to 5 X 0.8MM. Very easy, took about twenty minutes to do.

Looking upward from the floorboard, you'll see a blockoff plate that's molded into the ductwork. It's approx. 1 X 9" (going from memory here). Cut the blockoff plate out.

Using the W701696-S421 screws, mount the brackets to their respective bosses.

Here's where it gets a little tricky. Holding the cover in place, thread one or more of the N605758-S58 bolts in, JUST ENOUGH to feel the bolt give resistance. Back it out one turn, and take note of how much clearance is between the cover and the bolt's washer. This is how much the bolt needs to be trimmed by cutting/filing/grinding, or however you choose to make the bolt shorter.

**Added: You can bypass the custom work of re-tapping holes, and trimming bolts, by locating 4mm bolts of the correct pitch. It helps to have one of the brackets with you.**

Once you've finished trimming the bolts, get yourself a cabin filter

Baldwin PA4133
Hastings AF1057
Fram CF-8631
Motorcraft FP7A
Purolator C45384
Wix 24876

put it in, bolt the cover down, and you're done!

Then it's Miller Time.

Thanks Snapster. I appreciate the response. I have tried the search function on this and many other automotive (have a '46 ford and a '67 Cougar) and techno-nerd sites (I am a DBA/Dev as well) and though I know they are "godsends" and founts of information to the masses, and I do appreciate the advice, it's actually the search function that brought me to this question and the pics!

Of course, I did not see your thread in the returned results, because I didn't get through all 20 pages of returned links in the "cabin filter" search yet

I actually am sincerely thankful that you posted the info you did, just so I can take a look at installing the filter if it isn't already in there, so thanks very much for that! I thought that after paying $393.55 for a set of Service Manuals for the truck that SURELY the info you present in your post would be there in the manual...but no..*LOL* All I get is "if you have it, the dealer will have given you the docs"....the Ford version of "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" *LOL*

I posted the pics because, as I mentioned, I don't have access to my tools at the moment and had one of the searched-for threads mention that I could look under the dash and see if there was an opening cut into the plenum/box which, unless the filter had been added, would be smooth as a baby's behind.

Needless to say I saw neither, so just thought I would post my pics and see wassup. Apparently (as often happens in "help" sites) the info I found was bad for my truck. No prob.

So, thanks for returning not only some basic info (you need to get your tools) but also some expanded info (if you don't have it, here's how you can get it).

Thanks.
Paul

Well, now I found lots of such threads...sheesh...where were they when I looked before???? And now I can understand how a picture of my cover doesn't show anything it needs to show, as if installed, it would be under that cover, as you suggested.

Damn...I need to get at my tools!!!

Thanks again...musta been searching on one of those "other" F150 forums...

Anytime. For future reference, never pack away all of your tools. You never need them until you need them, ya know?
