You don't need a pulley puller unless your bearing is seized (rare) on the nosepiece of the compressor. You need some good, heavy snap-ring pliers. Remember to install the shaft key, and set the gap for the clutch using the shim washers.

well isnt that great. everyone said that i had to have a pulley puller. oh well.

would you care to go into further detail on getting the pulley off? id greatly appreciate. after looking at your diagram i still can't figure it out. ive taken the snap ring off. don't recall seeing any shims. don't have a clue as to where that key would go. all i have is a splined shaft that the clutch hub slips over. under that is the snap ring.

If your compressor shaft is splined, it won't have a key. That's an older diagram, but it's generally the same for all Ford compressors.

You might not have had any shims - see where it says "as required"?

The parts come off exactly as shown R-to-L, but the dust shield & pulley bearing should stay inside the pulley; you won't see them unless the bearing has failed catastrophically.

Once the pulley snap ring is off, it's just a matter of pulling it off. If it won't move, you can try your new puller, but I suspect you got a P/S pulley puller. For this job, you'd need a 3-jaw puller with some sort of cup to protect the compressor shaft from the puller screw.

i got a puller for pressed on bearings. it is 2 jaw as far as i could tell by the picture. ive tried pulling on it by hand and applying slight pressure with a screwdriver. the pulley wiggles but just doesnt seem to come off.

from what ive been able to tell there is a metal ring that covers the inner ring of the bearing. i cant find a way to get that off.

You don't need to get at it - just pull the whole pulley off as a unit. It can be difficult. Have you started soaking the compressor nosepiece with penetrating oil?

i tried it once before but didn't really get into. i was already frustrated with the thing and by the time i thought of it i had pretty much already given up. guess ill give a go at it whenever i get a chance at it. thanks for being patient with me and helping with suggestions.
