A/C on even though switch is not on A/C?

I have a '97 F150 and the A/C seems to run even though the A/C switch is not engaged. The only setting where the A/C doesn't kick on is PANEL, if you set it to any other setting it kicks the A/C on. Have any of you had this problem, and if so - what's the fix?
Thanks

The A/C compressor will cycle (or A/C runs) in most of the settings on the HVAC switch; max, a/c, blend, and defrost. This is the way the system operates. The compressor runs to remove moisture from the air to prevent the windows from fogging. Only in floor and panel does the compressor not run. There is no switch to stop this. The only way to prevent to the compressor from running would be to pull the compressor relay or the plug at the compressor.

It's not a problem. It's designed that way, on purpose.

There are several reasons for this, and a few of them are listed in the post above this.

VENT(PANEL), FLOOR, and OFF are only settings where compressor doesn't work.

Is there a RTFM smiley around

Owner's manuals are available for download at www.fleet.ford.com under the MAINTENANCE heading.

Thanks for the info

I am used to the compressor running when defrost is engaged with other vehicles but this was new. Thanks.
So you just turn the heat up to keep from freezing on the other settings huh?

yes, you are correct. Or move south towards the equator! You will no longer notice the compressor running!
