A/C issues

I have a 2000 Lariat 5.4L with 163,000 miles. I had to have the air conditioner recharged for the first time yesterday. These trucks continue to amaze me. I use the A/C seldom, but when I need it I want it to work. I am wondering if the fact that I use the A/C so seldom that that is the reason for the longevity of my charge? Or...am I just lucky?

My 98 still blows cold and it has never been recharged....I am the original owner. I use it a lot. The life of the oem stuff amazes me too. I got 6 1/2 years out of the oem battery, and the oem hoses are are still nice and flexible.

A/c

I have the OEM battery and hoses as well. I have not had to replace any major engine components, such as water pump, alternator or starter. I suppose in Nevada you do use your A/C alot.

According to Chilton...
"The easiest and most important preventitive maintenance for your a/c system is to be sure that it is used on a regular basis. Running the system for five minutes each month (no matter what the season) will help ensure that the seals and all internal components remain lubricated."
"Some newer vehicles automatically operate the a/c system compressor whenever the windshield defroster is activated. When running, the compressor lubricates the a/c system components; therefore, the a/c system would not need to be operated each month."
Just my 2 cents.

I just replaced my oem battery a few months ago.

Thanks for the information. Being in the midwest, I do use the defroster some throughout the year, so with the compressor activating during that function, I guess I use it more than I originally thought. Good information.
