134a

When did they switch to R134a in the air conditioning systems.

I have an engine out of an 02 that will be going into an 98.
The new engine also has a compressor for the A/c system.
What does it take to run the new stuff in an old system?
I have heard the seals/hoses are not compatible.
If I could I would like to switch to the new refrigerant because it is cheaper.
Thanks, Mark

From: Georgia on my mind...
Ford started to switch to R134a around the '94 to '95 model year. '98 will definitely have R134a.
