Exclamation Random Heater Operation

1999 F-150 Ext. Cab, 4.6 V-8. Recently, the heater has started kicking on at random times. Doesn't matter where the air is coming out of, including a/c. The temperature *** seems to have no effect on what I do. Today on the way to work it was cold outand blowing out cold air and so I turned up the heat and nothing happened. Stayed cold. A few minutes later, my random heat came in and stayed on. So when I came home, I took out the Climate control panel and took out the heater *** and it's dial, and opened it up and cleaned out the contact point thingy (nice technical term). Didn't work. Turned on the A/c, blew cold air for a few seconds then switched to full on heat. It seems to get worse as the truck is driven longer. Help me any ideas???

This sounds similiar to how my '99 F-150 was acting. First nothing but hot, then without any control changes the temp would switch to cold then maybe it would change back to hot. It seemed to have a mind of it's own. Finally it settled on cold all of the time no matter what control setting I chose. I checked everything out and finally deduced that my blend door was broken. I just replaced it yesterday and all is back to normal. Heat when I want heat and cold when I want cold. Hope this helps...

That's what my friend who works the parts counter at the dealer told me, so that's what I bought. The problem is, I can't figure out how to get the damn dash board out. I've followed both Haynes and most of Quintin's instructions, but I've tried two different times to get it out and have been almost there. So, unless if anybody wants to help me do it, it's going to the dealer on Friday . It would get done sooner, but my friend wants for it to be done by somebody experienced, not some goon who is just learning how to work on trucks.

Zaairman,
I have some very detailed instructions in MS Word format that I received from another forum member that I'd be happy to share with you. I had no problem following them and they were very accurate IMHO. I didn't find the procedure difficult, just time consuming. I would do it again in a heartbeat because it saved me hundreds of dollars and my heater works great! If you want the instructions just shoot me a PM with your email address.
