Automatic climate control - leave on or turn off?

Automatic climate control - leave on or turn off?
My ride: 2003 5.4 F150 KR with 24K miles. What is everyone's opinion about leaving the auto a/c in the on position when the truck is turned off? Or should I turn off the a/c before I turn off the engine?? The owner's manual says to leave the auto climate control on so the system can "breath", but the a/c makes such a hissing sound after I turn off the truck. I just don't want to prematurely break something in the a/c system.
