Why Did My Blower Motor Fill Up Wth Snow?

Ok 2003 F-150 heater motor would not work, had voltage to it, both, a positive, and a negative, removed the blower motor - fan unit, found the box filled up with snow, and the motor locked up, wound'nt rotate from the snow and ice, brought the motor in the house to thaw out, and installed it, works only on high speed now, but what im worried about is why did the heater box fill up with snow?

IF the snow was very dry, AND the wind was blowing at a good clip, OR idling with the fan pulling the snow into the fan housing could possibly cause a situation over the course of a few hours I suppose. Isn't the air pulled through the cowl plate? Normally a few leaves get into the housing, but this is the first I've heard of the whole thing getting loaded up with snow. Didn't yuns get something like 16 or 18 inches of snow?
