Fan speed control

I have one payment left on my '98 F-150,
and all of a sudden the ventilation system fan
doesn't work on the slowest 2 settings! Go Figure!
The rest of the settings are fine.
My question, do they control the speed
using different windings in the motor -or- is it the rotary
switch in the cab??

If it's the switch, how much of a pain is it to change?

Any advise sure would be appreciated!
Thanks!

More than likely it's the blower motor resistor.

I have the same problem. How is this fixed? Can parts be bought at Autozone and repaired by a novice mechanic?

I've been looking at it, based on what I see and what svt_sc_f150 wrote, I'm thinking the switch needs to be
replaced, or at least I am hoping the resistor is part of
the switch!
I "think" if I pull out the radio maybe I can get to the switch
to replace it. But that's a lot of hoping! I'm certain it would
have been "designed" to be much more difficult!

svt_sc_f150 was right, it was the resistor, took me awhile to find the time to search for it! It is located about 6" towards the driver from the blower motor itself. Getting it out is easy even though you can't actually see what you are doing! Unplug it (you can see the wires), then feel around to find the 2 screws holding it in place, an 8mm nut driver worked well for getting the screws out.

Now what I am finding, is that no auto parts stores have these!
And being Sunday, I'll have to wait to see how much the dealer will charge for it!

Once I get the new one I will post the part info here so you can grab a new one before hand!

Thanks svt_sc_f150!

No problem , glad I could help, and that I was right. Should have mentioned where it was located and how to test it, but it looks like you managed to find it. Good job. The dealer is just about the only place to find a new one. It can't be too expensive.

Yeah, you have to remove the cluster. It's really not that difficult.
