Evaporator Replacement

Anyone have any experience changing the evaporator on a 99 F 150?

My A/C dealer wants 1100 bucks to change the evap. Is this right?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have changed several F150/Expedition evaporator cores (I am a ASE Master Tech.) in my opinion it is not a job for a novice (no offence intended) replacement requires removal of the dash as well as the a/c & heater box a pro should be able to do it in around 5 to 6 hours the price you got is about normal for a evap +accumulator ans evacuation and recharge

It is a very diff. job. Sometimes I think they put the heater core and evap. in and then built the truck around it. There is a thread here explaining the procedure complete with pictures. You will see that you need to remove almost the entire interior including dropping the steering wheel, removing the inst. cluster and sound system and removing the dash board. Then of course after you access the evap. you need to have the equipment to do the evac. & recharge of the A/C. since the early 70's mustangs Ford has made a sport of burying the HVAC components. You might be able to shop it around and save a few bucks but I would rec. going with a shop that specializes in A/C repair as this type of job needs a lot of know how and doing it all of the time would really make it a better job.

Evap changed

Thanks for the info. I changed it by myself this weekend. Took about 8 hours without a manual. Took the dash apart in layers, after dropping the steering column. Left most of the wires connected and sit the dash body on top of the steering column which was in the floor, still connected. Left the heater box in place, by using a blow dryer to make the rigid blower box a little flexible. Did not drain the cooling sys or disconnect the heater core. Changed out the evap and the drier. Had the sys flushed, a vacuum leak test performed, and it charged today for 60 bucks. Total repair cost was about 250 bucks. Thats 1,250 cheaper than the Ford dealer wanted.

Yeah baby...we be chillin in Miami. ;-P

As an added note, you should think about replacing the heater core when you replace the evaporator.
