AC lek detection

Back in the day when R-12 ruled auto air conditioning, I bought an electronic leak detector (the kind that beeps rapidly when a leak was detected)

Will this unit work for the new R-134a gas?

Also can I use my old gauge set if i get the right adapters? I heard somewhere that the new gas may not be compatable with some of the rubber seals in the old gauge set. I don't want to contaminate my system by using my old gauge set if this is the case

Thanks for your replies

Yeah, it will still work with the 134a, but those detectors are not very accurate in finding the real small leaks. I prefer using the leak test dye & black light for leak detection. I suppose you could modify your old R12 gauges to work on the 134a system, but by the time you bought the adaptors & fittings you could probally buy a set of 134a gauges. IMO
