splicing usb into factory radio?

so im good at soldering and have a spare usb cable that i can use but i have no idea which wires to splice into. i want to be able to play and charge.

i have an 04 stx new body style and the radio is a single disc, no mp3, and has the aux button with no plug in. im not going to buy a new head unit or any adapter to get an aux plugin, this is just a project i want to do for fun and free and the learning experience.

has this been done before?

thanks.

When you say your radio has an aux button with no plugin, do you mean that there's no wires on the back on the radio for an auxiliary connection or that the back of the radio doesn't even have a spot for the aux wire harness to plugin to?

For power wire that's easy, I'd splice into the cigarette lighter power and pull from there, then step it down to either 3.3v or 5v depending on what your usb needs to charge at.

Sound is harder because you need to find a set of wires or inputs to splice into. If your radio has an empty spot on the back for an auxiliary plugin you most likely can utilize those pins.

sorry i mean it doesnt have the stock 3.5mm aux plugin in the tray above the radio like some models have.

the cigarette lighter is a good idea, i didnt think of that.

i havent pulled my radio out yet so i have no idea what it looks like back there but i figured there were a bunch of guys here who have and would be able to input their experience.

anybody know which wires to splice into? is it more complicated than that? is something like a pie module needed to interpret the data so the radio can understand it and play it back?

Yes you need the adapter that later was used in the 07+ trucks from the factory

PIE adapter sounds right as well
