Quick one: OEM to OEM swap

I have a 99 F150. It has the tape deck stereo. Can I plug and play an OEM CD stereo or (less likely) the base stereo head unit?

This will be from a similar era F150 as well. Im just looking for an OEM replacement as my stereo crapped out.

It's been a while since I've done one of those. If memory serves, you should be fine. Assuming the plugs match, no reason that it wouldn't work. As easy as it is to pull that HU out, you may want to pull it, and snap a quick pic for reference in your search.

I believe so as well, I think even CD to CD6 headunit (internal changer) is a plug and play operation

You'll need radio "keys" (tools)

Thank you fellas. I will take the suggestion to pull the unit and take a picture of the back plug ports. Seems a pretty fool proof way.

This almost answers my question but mine is a little deeper. I have a '97 Expedition E.B. with cassette in dash and a "side mounted" 6-disc player in the console (Mach sound). The player is on it's side (not the best idea) and skips at every thought of a bump. I would like to find a 6-disc in-dash unit w/o cassette to replace my unit and being old at 65, I'd like to be as close to plug & play as I can be. I am seeing arguments on Google, but no answers.
Some say 97-99 match, others say 97-03 and others say no. Hopefully, someone (as usual) here can answer a "dusty old mind" with a simple positive answer.
Thanks Guys!
