08 Head Unit Install

I decided to go with an aftermarket head unit. In end end, I wanted video...

I originally bought JVC KW-AV60. It was DOA.

I have since ordered Pioneer AVH-P3400BH. It should be delivered today.

I plan on using my Android phone and Wii as a video source. To get A/V into the HU I am using
Amazon Amazon
. It gets its power from either HDMI or USB. In the case of my Droid 3 phone, I need USB power. I have verified this works using my TV; cant wait to see it in the truck!

Red - Accessory Power
Black - Ground
Blue w/ White - Power Antenna

Factory Harness - SpeedWire Harness

How was the install? Did you happen to take any pictures during the process? I have been looking at this head unit for my 2007 f150, but I have never installed a head unit on my own before. Any help or tips would be much appreciated!

It really is a simple process.

The cover surrounding the radio and ac controls pulls off. Remove the harnesses from behind the panel.

There are 4 - 7mm bolts holding the stock HU in place. Depending on what stock radio you have, there may be 1 to 3 harnesses plugged into the back of the radio. The big one is the main harness.

On the replacement HU, I like to make the tape the harness together like the pic above. I do this at a table/bench in the house. If you are not using any amps, this is a very simple process. white - white, white w/ black - white / black, etc, etc.. There are 4 wires you will want to leave out if you are using a HU with Video - Black (ground), Blue (Amp Turn On), Lt Green (Video Bypass - depending on the HU, this should goto the Parking Brake + or -. I am bypassing it, so I will need the black and blue wires to do that). Purple (Reverse Signal) - Purple is only needed if you want a reverse camera.

I used a Scosche mount - It is what WalMart carries. There were some pieces that needed to be removed from the this. It comes with instructions as to what needs to be removed.

Once you have the wire harness taped together and the mount on the new HU, follow the instructions in reverse to put the new HU in place. Beginning to end, 1 hr maybe. This is assuming there is nothing "special" about the install (Bluetooth Mic, Vehicle Speed Sensor (needed for Nav), Parking Brake (needed for Nav/Video), Reverse Wire (needed for Reverse Camera))

I still have my dash apart as I am still waiting on a part for my install (Brake Bypass). I will take some pics and do a better writeup if you need.

Yeah, a few pictures would be really helpful. Especially in regards to the parking brake bypass. I've seen the piece on amazon that you can buy to help bypass it.

This will be Head Unit specific. Some Head Units are looking for the ground side of the parking brake, which all you have to do is run the Parking Brake wire to a constant ground (I would just tie into the ground (black) wire in the existing harness). My old JVC KW-NX7000 was like this.

Some Head Units are looking for 12v. These you can do the same as above, except use the accessory (red) wire.

Some Head Units are looking for a series like off-on-off-constant on from a 12v source. The Pioneer AVH-P3400BH is one of these Head Units. You could wire a relay (there are several wiring diagrams out there for this) or get one of the Micro Bypasses (which is what I did - http://www.microbypass.com/ they also sell on Amazon. I chose this route because of the size of the bypass. They are simple to install, blue - blue (amp turn on/any switched 12v should work), lt green - lt green (parking brake), black - black (ground)).

I spent most of today getting my reverse camera working. Still a few things to finish up with that. I will get a full write up with pics done probably this weekend.

Ok BAMA345, here is the writeup with Pics:
Note - this is how it was in my truck. I make no guarantee yours will be the same!

STEP 0!!! REMOVE THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL FROM THE BATTERY!!!

First, I needed to remove the Trim/Benzel around the HU. It is held in place by 8 clips, I found it easier to open the cup holder and start from the bottom.

Next, I removed the Wire Harness for the Passenger Airbag Warning Light. Push in on the clip and Pull Out the Harness.

Next, I removed the Wire Harness from the AC Speed Selector. Pull the Clip and Pull Out the Harness.

Next, I removed the Wire Harness from the AC Selector. Rotate the Gray Clip and Pull Out the Harness.

NOT PICTURED - Stock I also had a Cig Lighter below the AC Controls. The Wire Harness disconnects (dont remember how - I think, pull the Clip and Pull The Harness).

Now we have unrestricted access to the HU. It will be secured in place with 4 - 7mm bolts. Remove the 7mm bolts and Pull the HU out of the dash.

Now remove the Wire Harness from the Radio. Depending on what radio you have, there may be 1-3 Wire Harness attached. They all detach the same way. Press in on the Clip and Pull out the Harness

NOTE - I also had the stock sirius unit. Since I was replacing the stock HU I no longer needed this. To remove it, you may want to also remove the Cup Holder (I did not need to, tho it will make the job a whole lot easier). The antenna pulls out. The Wire Harness, Push In on the Clip and Pull Out. The unit is held in place by 4 - 7mm bolts (same as the radio bolts). The bolts go up from the bottom corners of the unit (you may be able to see the bracket in the pics). I used a short socket and 1/4" ratchet (this was all I had room for - this is where removing the cup holder is useful).

The dash kit should come with some spacers so the head unit sits flush with the rest of the dash.

The benzel isnt fully on in the video - still tring to figure out what Im goin to do about the reverse wire...

The HU actually doesnt sit flush in the mount. It is at a slight angle. I used the Scosche kit that I got from WalMart.

Yes - The benzel should sit flush with the mount.

Mine HU sat at an angle too, I had to modify the mount a bit to make it sit properly in the mount.

Does your 3400 do voice dialing? "Dial John Smith" kinda stuff? I need a new head unit and make a lot of calls from my truck.
