Android tablet for a head unit. A few pics...
Got tired of the plain jane pioneer double din that I had so I figured I'd try something a little different. I've always wanted a carputer (mp3car.com) and since tablets are so cheap and can do pretty much anything I sold my head unit for 250 and bought this little sucker for 150.
Lenovo Ideapad A1 rooted on gingerbread 2.3
Planet Audio EQ (sends rca signal to my amps and to have a full volume control ****)
bluetooth obd2 connector for Torque Pro app (torque pro)
I'm still testing some things and it's only temporarily mounted right now. I didn't want to mold it into my dash and then find out later I didn't like it. Once I get everything set up right and possibly upgrade to a faster tablet, then I will think about molding it into the center dash piece. I just got the EQ delivered today. Still waiting on the obd2 connector to come in. Hopefully I hard wire everything into my old radio harness on the 4th. Here's a few pics as it sits now.

Pros of this setup:
Full access to all my mp3s, navigation, obd2 diagnostics, full movie playback support, internet, internet radio, netflix, tons of games with bluetooth PS3 remote, etc
Cons:
No am/fm radio, no handsfree phone setup, no cd/dvd drive, my headrest monitors just became stand alone units since this has no video input or output.

3.5 mm headphone to rca adapter goes into a 4 band eq. The eq splits it up into front, rear and sub. RCA out to 4 channel and a mono block amp.

Plus the eq has 2 inputs, so I could run an aux input for an mp3 players, or have an actual radio hooked up too if I wanted.

Stupid question on my part
I know nothing about tablets, Ipads or what ever they may be so sorry for the ignorance I am showing here, but isn't there a monthly charge for the use of these things? Again, sorry for sounding stupid, just call me Forrest

And forgot to mention, that actually looks pretty cool Davis, nice job so far

It has a very glossy screen, so glare is still pretty bad in direct sunlight, but it is slightly better then what my pioneer double din was. I have a slight tint to my front windows, so the glare doesnt become an issue too often.
On another note, I did get the obd2 adapter in and it is working like a champ. I might try to get a video up of it working in the next few days.

The only time you would have to pay a monthly charge is if you have a 3g version for internet access through your cell phone carrier. Mine is wifi only so the only time I have internet access is through my cell phone's wifi tether and any wifi access points I come across. As far as everything else, theres no monthly charge (aside from some apps like netflix)

I am thinking on doing something like this but using a Samsung Galaxy 5.0 to do it since it has an FM tuner built in.

Love it! I've been wanting to install a Mac Mini in mine since I saw this: http://tunertricks.com/blog/index.php?p=40 But your solution does seem much simpler; and simple seems like the better idea for a project like this. Very cool!
Found a 7" tablet with built in FM radio.

If you have an Android phone, please root it. You can tether for without the need of their $20/month package. Or you can use FoxFi which doesn't require Root. There are options for a Jailbroke Iphone also....
I have the Unlimited data package still with Verizon and tether from time to time without paying their Tethering package. Is it against the ToS? Yep. I mostly use it for letting my daughter watch Amazon Prime and Netflix videos on the Ipad as we travel.
Tethering to your phone while you travel can help with searches in Google Maps, but GPS is a must in this case for the tablet you use if you want to use Navigation.
