Switching from single DIN to double

Just picked up a new kenwood double DIN to replace my old kenwood single DIN. the single is installed right now where the is a tray underneath the head unit. Could i just take out the tray and single and put in the double, or do i need to get a double DIN kit for install?

(Really hard to explain sorry)

I believe you'll need the double din kit, unless your single din is modular and came with the double din ring for it and if the little cubby thing is removable.
