hookup an ipod to a basic XL headunit?

I have a 2009 XL with the basic headunit that only plays the radio. Is there a cheap way to hookup my iPod without replacing the headunit?

Dont waste your time with junk FM transmitters. The only ones even remotely worth while are the monster ones, and they are $100 bucks. I dont know much about the 09's, maybe others will chime in, but on the basic headunits I dont believe that they have the multiple plugs on the back to add an aux.

Your best bet may be an FM modulator. Essentially, it is an FM transmitter in the sense that you still set your FM to 87.9 or 88.1, but it is wired instead of wireless and has much better sound quality. FM Mod's have an RCA input on them, which allows you to use an RCA to mini cable and plug that into your headphone jack on your ipod.

I thought FM transmitters and FM modulators are the same thing. They accept the signal from a 3.5mm phono source or 30-pin Ipod connector (depending on the design of the unit), or internally from a device with a transmitter built in, and transmit it at a frequency designated by either the user (if the transmitter/modulator will span the FM band) or the unit itself. Either way, an FM modulator or FM transmitter would be wireless from the low-level source to the radio. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The modulators actually install directly to the antenna wire between the antenaa and the radio, so its still giving you an FM signal, its just going straight into the antenna wire so the quality is much better. I used one on my daughters Cougar so she could use her iphone. I didn't want to replace the factory head unit since the car had the 6-disk CD changer and wanted to keep that functioning

Oh, okay. Thanks! I've actually never seen one. That would be the better method.

We sell em at bestbuy for $45. You will also need two antenna adapters, metra part number 40-CR10 and 40-CR20, and an RCA to 3.5 cable, male on both ends.
