Unhappy New Headunit = New Problems = Questions

So I got a Pioneer Premier DEH-P710BT for Christmas. I installed it myself and it seemed pretty straight forward (already had an aftermarket setup). Upon using it for a few days, I'm having a few issues. I'm going to put a call into Crutchfield tomorrow to discuss some of the issues. One is when using my iPhone to play music through USB, after about 10-20 seconds of playing when I first plug it in, it stops. The display shows the song is still playing but there's no sound. The only way to get it back is to cycle through my sources until I get back to my iPhone. Then it picks back up and has no issues at all.

The next issue is some speaker noise. I know traditionally, this is a grounding issue. Is the place to start the actual stereo grounds I soldered together? I never had any feedback issues with my previous install so I assumed my amps were grounded just fine.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

Cant really speak to the iphone issue. If you have a regular ipod, plug that in and it see if it does it as well. If it does, its the deck, if it doesnt, its an issue with your phone.

As for the speaker noise, is it on all sources, or just one? I have a small hiss with im using my ipod (only noticeable in between tracks) that isnt there when im on a CD.

Ok, so after taking my dash apart again and reviewing my install, here are my thoughts:

Figured out the iPhone issue. Not sure if I like this, but what was happening was the iPhone would begin playing when I plugged it in. However, that same phone was attempting to establish a bluetooth connection with the headunit. When it finally established, thats when it would stop audio playback. I used another iPod with no issues as well as my wifes iPhone with no issues. I turned bluetooth off on my iPhone and had no issues. I then started the truck, let my iPhone establish a bluetooth connection and then plugged it in, with no issues.

Any additional thoughts as to whether this seems normal or something I could call to the attention of Crutchfield or Pioneer, would be greatly appreciated.

As for the speaker noise, It doesn't happen enough for me diagnose at this point. Its not consistent or constant. So I might have to continue observing that for a bit.

Thanks again for any feedback.

Call Crutchfield and you'll get it figured out.

Alright, have a bit more information on the "noise" I get periodically. See if you can figure this out. It only happens when my passenger front door opens! Thats why its periodic. I do most driving by myself. So every time my passenger door opens, I get a whine/hiss noise in my speakers. As soon as it shuts, all gone! Any insight? Thanks.

Only thing I can think of is a pinched/grounded speaker wire, but that usually shuts the speaker down.

Ok where do I look to find the issue. The speaker is working fine and is it strange that this didn't happen with my old headunit? I didn't connect the speaker wires from the Pioneer harness to the factory adapter harness since I'm using amps to drive the speakers. The Pioneer instructions said not to connect those wires if using external amps. I also soldered the ground wire from the Pioneer to the ground wire from the adapter harness (this was the way it was setup with my previous Alpine which I did not install). Should I have grounded this wire separately to a piece of metal in the dash? This is just bizarre to me. Thanks again for your input.

Damn man i really dont know. That is a strange one. All i can think of is when the door is open, it puts a stress on the wire somewhere. There is no real easy way to check this. Is it out of all speakers? or just the passenger door?

It's out of all of the front speakers for sure (components). Not sure about the back ones, haven't been back there yet. So if there's a pinch somewhere and I can rectify that, you think it would fix it? I've pin-pointed it even further. When I open the passenger door and stop it at the first catch-point (half-open), no noise. As it approaches the final catch-point (full-open), thats when the noise starts. As soon as I bring the door back toward the first catch-point, it goes away, open it up, there it is. Should I check the connections to the speakers in the door? Mind you my speaker wire comes from the back wall of my SuperCrew. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, check the speaker wire that you ran. Thats the only thing that I can think of that could be causing it based off what your describing. And it would make sense that it does it at full open as that where the biggest gap is, and in turn, the most stress.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I was getting noise when I opened either of the front doors in my truck. It turned out to be a bad RCA. The dome light signal was feeding back through the RCA. I swapped out each of the 3 RCAs with a new one and found out one was bad. I ended up replacing all 3 with new ones from knukonceptz, rerouting the RCAs away from the wires in the door trough, and the noise is gone for good.

Thanks for this input. I'm really hoping thats not the case. I just installed all of that stuff last Christmas and really don't want to do it again. Its weird to me that it only happens on the passenger door and when its open beyond the halfway point. I'll test the other doors in the morning and see whats going on. Where did you end up routing your RCA's? Thanks.

Thanks Sundevil as well. I'll let you know if I make any progress.

Ok so here's more info on the noise issue. I looked first at that rubber gasket you have to feed speaker wire through from the cab of the truck to the door. I noticed the side that connects to the door had popped out of its hole. I could see my speaker wires so I grabbed each one individually and started playing with them to see if I could get the feedback to stop. Sure enough I did. Wiggled it for a bit and got it in a position where the noise stopped. Pressed the rubber gasket back into the door and made sure it stayed, still no noise. Opened and closed the door a few times with no recurring noise. So for the meantime it appears to be solved. My question is, would you suggest opening up the panel and checking the connections to the back of the speakers or am I good now? Thanks.

If the speaker is working you should be fine. If it starts to cut in and out, take the panel off and check it.
