2000 Excur head unit flickering

2000 Excur head unit flickering
i have a 2000 Excursion and on my drive back from wi to ok my radio started to flicker on and off to be followed by a burning wire smell (i had my lights on and heater as well). after removing the radio fuse the smell stoped. i was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what i should expect when i remove my radio.
