head unit install question

im planning on getting a new headunit to replace the stock one. would it be better to pay the money for a wiring harness, or just cut the factory harness off and solder on the new one?

Get the wiring harness!!!!! It is cheap (walmart) and easy to install/uninstall if you ever put the stock stereo back in (sell truck) or install another stereo.

Why would u even think of doing that?! let's put it this way...

Gee my hand doesn't fit through that hole there... oh well I'll cut off my arm and get a new one that fits...

sorry I just don't understand the reasoning behind cutting off the harness when a new HU doesn't last more than a few years in a vehicle, down the road u WILL need to change the HU and if u cut off the harness ure gonna be left with a mess

Agreed. Never ever cut the harness. If an adapter isn't available, you'd be better off tearing the plug out of the oem HU and making your own than cutting the harness in the dash.

at work if there is absolutely no harness available, we tap behind the factory plug (i guess it's better than hacking the harness )
