DVD Head Unit, can it work when driving?
I want to get the DVD head unit. The double din kind. for my new F150 screw. We go on long trips the family and me. we use a portable DVD now. and the wife and I were talking, we would like one that replaces the factory radio, but they say the parking break has to be on. Can you not hook up the green wire, At least on says its a green wire that has to be hooked to the parking break. OH well, can you not hook up the parking break so the wife and kid can watch movies when we are driving. They hate the portable DVD. Thanks guys.
It's against the law to have a video screen update more than once every 1 second while the car is in motion.
With that being said, it's usually possible depending on the brand. Eclipse headunits just require you to ground the wire that determines if the parking break is on. Alpine headunits require a special adapter (a PAC device called a TR-7) to do the video bypass.
However, if this is for the kids, you may want to consider putting in a video screen in the headrests that would be capable of displaying the video in real time. Alpine makes some good options for doing this, including wireless headphones. You could put one source to your speakers (let's say the radio) and then have the DVD play on the monitors in the headrests while the audio from the DVD plays to the headphones. Of course the setup would cost a bit more. A DVD headunit may cost you $1000, the price could be almost doubled for the headrest monitors and headphones.

the way my buddy did it is he wired it like hes supposed to, but he when he wants to watch it, he taps the emergency brake just enough so it tells the dvd players its engaged, but brakes arent touching the disc.
and I grounded my safety wire to the cigarette lighter ground. At night I can turn up the dash lights to engage the safety so it looks like a legit install. Since night time is really the only time anyone would notice the screen flashing.
When a friend of mine put an aftermarket dvd head unit in the shop added a switch like mentioned, but he had to push the brake in(not parking brake) and then flip the switch back and fourth once. That would enable the head unit to play. But I've seen others that didn't have to do anything.
