Smile Swapping Out Head Units

Can anyone tell me if the ford head units are interchangeable? I have a friend who took his Shaker500 head unit out of his Mustang for an aftermarket unit and I wanted to put the Shaker500 unit in my F150 (2004) but after checking around it depends on who you ask as to if the radio will work in my truck! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am presently trying out this same swap. The problems I am having are lack of steering wheel controls (somewhat understandable) and also the back-light dimmer function is not working. I'm assuming that speed volume is not working either. All other functions seem to be working. You will need to add a subwoofer, as the Shaker system filters out the low frequencies to the door speakers.

Worland, is it possible to get the missing functions back?

Thanks

Almost every passenger car head unit is not 100% compatible with the F-150. The passenger car head units typically require a data (CPU) down load when removed from the passenger car (used). When installed in a new vehicle, they also require a data upload to the vehicle's CPU. The main problem is, the F-150 head units are plug-n-play and don't require a down load or up load. The truck's CPU isn't programmed for it.

Your local dealer should have a list of head units that are compatable with your F-150. The listing I have is from 2005 and it shows Mustang head units should not be installed in F-150's due to the programming issue.

The mustang HU puts out a 2ohm signal while the f150 speakers are 4ohm
