Installing SWI-X on 06 Lariat?

I'm doing some research before I purchase the PAC SWI-X interface for my Panasonic CQ-VD6503U.

My questions are:
- Is there any other known alternative for controlling my panasonic head unit from the steering wheel controls? An installer I talked to said Metra makes one but I couldn't find any information.
- Do I need to remove the steering wheel column cover to install the unit? I would assume that since they were connected to the headunit before, all the wires should be available behind the current head unit.
- For those that have the SWI-X, how bad is the delay? If I press and hold a button, will it be the same as pressing and holding a button on the IR remote (like introducing FF/rewind functionality instead of just seek).
- Where should I install the transmitter? I was thinking either the center console (I already have a cable run there for my Ipod adapter) or there should also be LOS from the bottom of the rear view mirror. I have a moonroof so there is no overhead console. I know there are issues with the transmitter and/or reciever being in direct sunlight which is why I am thinking the bottom of the rear view mirror might be a better choice provided that I shield it correctly.

Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

I'll only attempt to answer part two of your questions. Only three wires are required and you don't have to get inside the steering wheel to make the connections. One is the steering wheel control wire which you can connect to in the factory radio wiring harness right behind your head unit. The other two connections are a 12 volt + and ground. These two can also made in the wiring harness. You can download the PAC SWI-X manual from Crutchfield as it may be of help. http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Man...27/127SWIX.PDF.
