Replacing factory Cassette with factory CD

I wonder if anyone knows if the wiring (plugs) for the 1999 Expedition AM/FM cassette head unit is the same as the AM/FM CD player of the same year and later. Basically, can I find a factory Ford CD unit, remove my cassette unit, just plug in the CD player and will it still run my factory changer in the console? Any help is appreciated. I hate having to load the changer just to play a single CD.

Pretty much any of the radios from 98-02 have the same plugs. The only differance is audiophile and non audiophile

Factory Cassette to CD

Thanks for that info! Do the Audiophile units look different from the standard units?

It fits!

OK! I have now successfully installed a 2000 Factory CD/Cassette stereo in my '99 Expedition. I had to cut two long slots, from front to rear, on either side of the plastic "roof" above the stereo and inside the dash and one laterally just above the rear support. It was then, effectively hinged just behind the fascia. This was needed because the CD unit is a cube and the Cassette stereo was stepped on top. When the new stereo was pushed in the plastic just pushed up and out of the way. This whole job took less than 15 minutes total! I suppose I could have removed it completely, but it doesn't hurt to leave it there. The wiring is identical and it even runs my factory CD changer. Much more convenient and it sounds better too!
