05 OEM Head Unit specs?

Wondering if anyone knows the output rating for a OEM single disc head unit. I'd like to replace the speakers, but have no interest in adding an amp or aftermarket radio. So I'd like to try and match up a good set of speakers according to the output.

My non-audiophile 6CD HU appears to be no more than 20W/ch rms@1%THD assuming the HU's amp is a variant of a similar amp that has a similar part number and pinouts. Yours might be very similar...

The single CD appears to have a little more power than the 6CD changer. I'd guess it's about 22.5 to 25 watts. The single CD also sounds better.

I've got the same HU in my Sport Trac. The HU has plenty of power to push the Polk db570's I've got in there (6-60 watts RMS, 180 watts max). The factory speakers are 4 ohm 25 watts.

The amp in my HU is a ST Micro 09375459. Looks like some custom
Ford number or something because I can't find it in ST's standard
product lineup.

It appears to be similar to a ST TDA7561 which is spec'd for
4x20Wrms@4ohms and 4x30Wrms@2ohms @14.4V@1% THD.
Output power is as high as 27W/ch at higher THD specs if
I remember right. I haven't actually measured anything to confirm.

In reality, power inside cars/trucks is about a volt less than 14.4V,
so all of these specs that everyone is claiming is somewhat of a bluff.

What is the best money spent to upgrade your stock single cd OEM stereo? I'd like to keep the origional headunit and keep a stock look. Is it worth it to add a hidden amp? I'd love to have sirrius, but don't want to add the thing off to the side.

Just my 2-cents... I think the factory HU has sufficient power to push a decent set of after-market speakers. A nice set of Infinity, Bose or Polk speakers make a huge difference. The most bang for your buck would probably be a sub-woofer. The powered sub-woofers are relatively inexpensive and can be tucked away under or behind a seat.

To keep the stock HU be sure to get an amp or sub-woofer with "speaker level inputs". That way you can just splice into the factory speaker wires for the input to the amp.
