Head Unit Gets Hot!!!
Head Unit Gets Hot!!!
Is there a reason that my stock in dash gets hot? If I play a cd for 30 min. or longer when that cd comes out it is extremely hot. Is this normal? Never really noticed it on my older ford at all.
Thanks,
Denham

My Eclipse AV-8132 does the same thing in my Honda Pilot. CD's and DVD's are very warm when they come out. Does not seem to hurt but, that extreme heat would have to have some long term effect, you would think.
I'm 100% sure it is normal i have an 03 f150 supercrew and the same thing happens to me. the reason is it is a diffrent laser that reads the cds and the laser just like any light will creat heat. ill ask arround at my shop and find out more for you.
The laser?
Typically it's a combination of the display, and the amp/heatsink combo with little circulation to get the hot air out.
Just ask General Motors about that one. They make these great decks that get super super hot. - to the point that the paint/label gets browned on the disc.

CDs and DVDs normally get pretty hot when played in a car stereo. There's not a lot air circulation in there and the components such as the amp, motor, laser and heat sink are crammed in a very confined space. Even the old Ford CD players got the discs hot.
I have a non-audiophile mp3 6CD unit. The left side of the unit is a piece of aluminum plate that's used as a heatsink for the amp and one other big power device. It does get hot to the touch after a few minutes, and quite a bit of the heat is conducted/radiated inside.
I doubt the laser pumps out so much power...
