I installed the Pioneer DEH-P80MP that I purchased on eBay for about $270...I know that's a bit above your stated budget but I can only comment on what I purchased. Anyway, it sounds great and has the preouts for a subwoofer and amp.

I am a little puzzled why you are not changing out the oem speakers for some better speakers considering the addition of an amp and subwoofer. What amp are you considering? Is it for the subwoofer or the system speakers?

You would be better off spending the cash for a good radio and waiting a little longer for the other parts of the system. The system will only sound as good a the source unit so cheap is not a good thing here.I have had good luck with kenwood and alpine both.As for what to buy just look at them and get one that fills your needs now and has some room to grow later.

What exactly are the advantages of a new unit? I was thinking of just using a sub and amp on the stock unit to make it sound better.

THe aftermarket HU enables you to adjust the low's mids' and highs; with the stock you can only adjust the Bass and trebble. I got the 6700 from millionbuy.com for 170 and its great. You also have 2 outputs in case you want to run lows(subs) and some components. Either way you go you will be better off. Even just adding an amp and subs would sound decent.

Yup, I ran a 12 off the stock HU and with the stock speakers for awhile untill I got the money for more-It makes HUGE differnce in the way it sounds-its not great, but its much better.

A good aftermarket HU also makes a big difference. To say it shortley, they have MUCH more flexability in sound shaping, and just all around better SQ. But-there are so many reasons an aftermarket HU is better than the stock one I dont even know where to start. However-there are plenty of people that think the stock HU works very well-plus-its kind of a theft deterent thing. If a would be theif looks in and sees a stock HU, they will probably pass yourvehicle up for the next one that has a nice expensive aftermarket HU in it. That is the only way I see the stock HU being superior to an aftermarket one.
