Please help me out – I’m stereo illiterate . . .
I’ve been reading through old threads using the search button, and I still have questions – maybe someone could help me out. What I’d like to do is increase my CD capacity using factory Ford equipment, in the form of a CD6 or remote changer or both. I like the CD6 unit in my wife’s Windstar, but when I check pricing, the remote changers seem to be a lot cheaper.
What I have is a factory single CD player that came with the truck. First, I can’t tell if it can control a CD changer or not – I’ve read where apparently not all of them do, and the only test I’ve found is to push the CD button while a CD is playing to see if it gives an alternative message. Mine doesn’t, but I don’t have anything hooked up to it as well. I’ve attached pictures of my unit to help you help me out.
I also have read where the S’crews already have part of the wiring harness already installed – there apparently is an upper harness that goes from the head unit to the underneath the passenger kick panel, and a lower harness that goes from there to wherever the changer is mounted. I’ve looked under the panel, but I really don’t know which one would be the right harness, so I don’t know if this exists or not. In addition, I don’t have a console, so I’d have to put a changer somewhere else – is the factory spot behind the passenger side rear seat?
Next part – if I do get a CD6, can I still add a remote changer as well? If so, is there a particular model of CD6 I should be looking for? On ebay, there are a bunch of them, and many say they will fit an F150, but I’ve also read some threads where people had a hard time hooking them up. Can I just look for one that has the same plugs on the rear as mine does? Which plug on the rear of the head unit does what?
I know it’s weird to have someone actually want to add factory equipment instead of aftermarket – what can I say? I don’t really need anything high performance, and I really like having the truck have a stock look to it.
Thanks in advance!

I looked into the MP3 unit - it looked like I might not be able to wire it in . . .
BUT . . .
I did find an external changer out of a 99 Lightning with cable really cheap, and I got it hooked up tonight. What I found out is yes, the supercrews (2001) do have a partial wiring harness already installed that ends under the passenger kick panel. Due to the difference in years, the plugs didn't quite match, but the wires were all the same, so I just spliced them in. It works great!
In addition, I also managed to find an indash unit cheap as well, and also now have that installed. It also conrols the external changer well, and the only thing I had to do to get it installed was trim back the plastic brace under the dash to make room for the bigger unit.
So . . .
I now have 12 CD capability! (and the original single CD unit with RDS for sale . . .)
