Which Head Unit Should I Get?
Which Head Unit Should I Get?
Howdy All,
I had my stereo stolen a few weeks back... it was a SONY CDX-M800. It was an awesome head unit and I liked it alot... I just feel like getting something different since the opportunity was given too me... so what would be a good brand to go with?
Everywhere I've looked everyone seems to be completely hooked on Alpine, but IMO they just don't look that appealing to me, and looks are important... but so is function. I was looking at a Rockford unit (Since I'm going to be going with Rockford Amps and Components) and at the Sony CDX-M9905X. It's pretty damn expensive though. If I was to buy a Rockford unit I think the one I'd get would be the RFX9320 but I don't know...
anyone want to give their opinions?

If I were going to be buying a single DIN headunit, I would turn to Alpine and never look back. By far my Alpine headunits have been far better than any of the other units I've owned (Pioneer, Clarion ProAudio, Sony).

R u on drugs????i have had nothing but problems with Alpine....they are the worst head units available.....Pioneer and panisonic are really good units....get a head unit with subwoofer out too...it will save you a world of trouble too
I just put my pioneer DEH-9600mp in the dask kit today. No truck to put it in yet though. I have to see it in the truck though, as of now I don't like the way it looks in the dash kit. But it's silver face with chrome accents will match the fx4 interior nicer.
And I have never had any issues with any of the alpines I have used or any that my friends have had.
2fast4u2 - I think you are just the board idiot and you ego is making your equipment go bad. Just a head's up boss.

My sister owned a lower model Alpine and it was a pretty nice HU, only thing is it would stop playing the cd every once in a great while, and you had to eject it and put it back in, they it would work fine. Another thing Iv heard is some Alpine units clipping when the volume starts getting cranked, which can kill everything.
My Pioneer has been good, only problem is sometimes it doesnt fully eject the cd. Other than that, good.
Crudeau, Once you get that HU in, you will love it.
My buddy has a Rockford HU that seems to be pretty nice, havent seen much of it, but it doesnt seem to bad.
My other friend had an Eclipse. Very nice HU. Plus, its Eclipse-so you know its gotta be good.
Clarion Pro Audio also makes some nice HU's.
I would also forget the Sony. They used to make nice car audio, now its mainly crap. The Xplode models even tend to live up to their name
Darn dial up wont let me look at the link Joe Bronco posted, damn 26K.

I say that only so you can go get the new AVIC line. Beautiful piece of equipment. Pioneer is gonna force Eclipse to raise the bar again. Competition is wonderful.
Eclipse is the big daddy trump card of stereos. You probably won't ever use it to it's full potential (most people won't at least).
Pioneer is extremely good for tuneability especially amongst the premier line (worth the negligible price difference) and thus far very reliable.
Clarion is a good company whose only drawbacks is it's said by some to be missing the "eye-popping" style (except their high end units look awesome) that some newer units have.
Alpine is a good reliable brand. Not as much insane tune ability of some other brands (put my 9853 in my fiance's truck) but I'm not gonna toot the collective horn of this thread.
Kenwood...ahh, kenwood. My old standby, I have two units that I use specifically as tester units to see what people really want since other than sony it is the most commonly known name for first time customers. They always love them. And I hate their warrenties for all the tiolet paper they are written on is worth. If you get a good one you will love it forever, if not...I always need paperweights.
Rockford has come into their own and developed a hell of a market for themselves recently and I respect that of their savvy...however they are still relitively new and untested (in HU's) and from what I have seen of their reliability So Far (keyword there) I don't like their products because of that issue.
Lastly, your old sony was a good product...to you, and that all that matters in the end. Hope you enjoy whatever new toy you got for yourself.

I'm for Alpine, I have the 9853 in my truck now and had the 9851 in there previously, both decks are awesome and have a great clarity to them. The 9853 is a little difficult to tune to your liking if your a novice at this stuff, but I'd recommend the 9851 if you want a very good sounding, easy to use, and very good looking deck. If you have an iPOD, they connect right to the Alpine interface for the iPOD and sounds 10x better than a CD.
All for Alpine Too!! had a few in the past and always been easy to use. Got the 9855 in my truck the other day, AWSOME HU!! Very tuneably, and the glide touch is pretty cool.
Had a few clarions in the past and liked them too! Newer ones styling lacks a little to be craved, but good products. only one problem was the ribbon the goes to the face plate split on one the had a non-motorized face.
Call me crazy but the first thing that I look for in a HU is how the controls are set up. Always have loved a Know for volume control, and like the track search buttons to be on the drivers side of the HU, so no reaching across. I know, most have a remote, but I guess I'm just picky.
