factory head unit
here is the extremely simple answer...
No!!!!
Now for the explanation.
The factory head unit has absolutely none of the tuneability of an aftermarket HU (the new audiophile stock set-up might, but no customers are willing to bring those bad boys in for us to play with yet). Odds are you will not have an individual subwoofer setting to tune the beast without constantly checking the gains on your amps. I myself enjoy custom settings for all my different types of music and as I have sat. radio and love the comedy chann. I have to have a setting to instantly kill bass, raise treble and level the mid since comedians on live tracks have a tendency to pull the mic to close or cough into it any sound effects they love to do. When my old HU sub setting died, I immediately felt it's effects as the bass from talk radio became agitating.
If you want to try by all means, it's your truck and do whatever you wish. But when it comes to the potential of a jacka$$ on a live feed destroying my stereo because I had it up to loud when I changed the source. Oh no no no, that will not fly for me.
Whatever you decide, let me know.

I'll need the model number; from there I can tell you what you should do. I'm not certain as to your current knowledge of electronics so let me know if you are comfortable doing the install or if you want someone else to do the harness or if you just want someone else to install it altogether. If you want to do it yourself you will need a basic car kit (between 14-28 bucks) to hold it in place, some crimpers and adaptors and some Ford din removal tools (about three-five dollars at Wal-Mart) to get the stock unit out. The reason I need the model number is to make sure it is a multi-amp unit and can handle it.
If you want to let the pros handle it, try and ask if you can buy the stuff yourself online (or at the store) and pay one of the installers to do it after work in the parking lot for you (or yours or their house so they don't get in trouble with the boss). Also if you would list your general location (so I can get you the local prices).
If I missed any part of your question just re-post it and I'll check tommorow evening.
Good Luck and sorry it took so long

thanks very much,I'll get the number and let you know.do you need to know about the amps also?I'm looking to be able to fade front, rear,And left and right balance. For some reason it does not do that now.I'm wondering if i may need to run some more rca deals from the cd back to the amp.
i thought my truck sounded fine with the factory head unit. all i did was install the hi/lo converter to facilitate using rca's to the factory stereo. couldnt have been happier. however, i only used the factory speakers for treble, no bass. had all the bass going to the sub. all i had to do was turn the bass all the way down on the stereo, and turned the gain on the ampilfier where i wanted the bass to be. easy as pie. it would be helpful to know what you want to use your stereo for. ie... whether you want the whole neighborhood to hear it, or do you want it to sound good to you, and maybe a couple of neighbors. haha. l liked it, but i guess thats just my opinion. I just want clear sound for me with the windows up lol.my factory cd just did not have much treble and was not very clear. It sounded more like a tape player.now with the amp and new rockfords in the doors it sounds much better, but i think it could be a little more clear.Plus for some reason it does not fade front to rear anymore.
now i do have a amp on the door speakers and the sub does this make a difference.the same guy that hooked ot it my last truck, did this truck. In the last truck i used the pioner head unit and the same amps and it would fade and balance.
the reason im asking is, is the fact that the factory radio dosent have rca outputs, you have to have a hi lo converter. it basically hooks in, gives you two pigtails ie. the rca's. i basically had the same issue. if i tried to fade to back, it would fade the subwoofer too. since im in a truck though, i didnt really need the ability to fade, so i didnt really miss it much. it wasnt really an issue to me. different note though, i did have the pioneer 8600 in my ranger when i traded it in. kind of wish i hadnt left it in there. would have been real nice in the screw. aftermarket is always easier though. will eventually upgrade to aftermarket, or the factory in dash 6 disc( thats my dream right now ). its just hard to find em. will find one eventually for the right price.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you partner work beckons. I pulled the info on your unit from the books and I wanted to make sure I had this right, because you stated it was a few years old and I find your unit in our XM ready catalog. The pre-outs weren't listed (stupid MECP morons) but it appears to have two and a controller for the XM direct unit so my recommendation is to definetly get that bad boy installed. I can't believe this thing is collecting dust. Odds are (if said installer is using his brain) he'll do a simple one hookup to the door speakers amp and one to the sub amp. That will give you a whole heck of a lot more tuneability from the user end. What is killing me is it appears your Pioneer has a digital EQ built in and that alone will stomp a mudhole into any factory (non-bose, to you high end owners) head unit.
I would completely recommend having that unit put in and if you don't, I'm coming up there and swiping that thing from you. Ford makes a great truck but the sound system leaves a lot to be desired. Time to install. Any other questions I can get for you, you know where to find me.

yes,it is xm compatable and it has the eq,and the subwwofer controls.Maybee it is just under 2 years old, somewhere in there i had it in may last truck for a while.I was just trying to keep the factory look, but i cant stand knowing that it can sound so much better.i do have a few qeustions.with my setup he has 2 line converters behind the radio in the dash to connect the rca jacks.what i'm thinking is i will have to run a 3rd set of jacks for the sup output on the cd to the sub amp.now i'm wondering what i will have to do to find out what speakers are which.
