airbox mod

I've heard that cutting a hole(s) in the stock airbox will increase flow and boost..... is this correct ?? Do I need to connect flexible hose to this or just cut the holes ??? Any info is appreciated !

yes it is true... ive also heard its better then adding a air intake.....but yea you can either cut a big hole like 3 inchs in the bottom of the air box and run a tube through the fenderwall and down near the foglight, but be sure to put some screen or mesh type thing to stop stuff from flying up the tube...this is just like ram air...the L guys do this alot. your other option like you said is to cut little holes in the bottom, add a K&N and your set, cheap mod

Slick02...... thanks for the reply. I've added the K&N, Flowmasters, and the Superchips Micro Tuner....... I don't want to do much more, but I had heard this would help increase airflow and boost somewhat.

Grayhd2 -
How do you like the Flowmaster - what series did you use. I have been thinking about doing a cat-back exhaust and using Flowmaster because I have very easy access to it. Most are using the Basani and I have heard that the sound from Flowmaster can be a little to harsh compared to the Basani, especially interior cabin sound.
Anyone else using Flowmaster and like or dislike the results?

I have a 2 chamber Flowmaster on my 4.6 liter. I had it done by a guy in Garner, NC. He cut out everything from the stock muffler back. He installed a 2 chamber Flowmaster (I don't know what series number) with 1 inlet and 2 outlets. He ran the pipes straight out the back with big chrome tips. I like it alot. The sound in the cab is a little louder than I really wanted, but when I crank up the stereo I can't hear it. At certain RPM the Flowmaster kinda sounds like its echoing in the cab. What part of NC are you in? I would highly recommend the guy that did mine if you are in central NC.

I used to own a 2001 Lightning and I did this mod. I cut the hole and ran a 4" flexable tube to the front. I snaked it behind the front bumper area. The idea is to draw cooler air in. This isn't a ram air by any means.

I am about to do this to my 2002 HD also. I purchased the parts at Home Depot for $12. This time I'm going with a 3" setup - much easier to work with. I'll post some pics of my parts and the work when I do it.

As a side note, according to Sal from PSP, the airbox mod is good for up to 4lb of additional boost. I'm not saying it gives you that much extra boost. I'm saying that if other mods give you more than 4 lbs of boost( ie 6lb pulley), then the flat panel K&N can't pass enough air. At this point, you need to look at a cone setup with box around it.

Or you could do what rtkilla did to his Lighting - but I don't know how he keeps that thing clean!

Treadwheeler....... I think the Flowmaster was a 40 series street setup. I really like the sound, but at certain speeds..... 50-60mph it does seem to echo as JOHNSON505 put it, thru the cabin. Other than that, it has a great sound to it !!

St. Louis Lightning...... let me know how it goes. I have done the K&N, Flowmasters, and Superchips Micro Tuner..... this has given me about 3lbs additional boost. I think this airbox mod would help from what you and others have said. What is the easiest way to cut the hole in the box ??

I traced out my hole and used a dremel. I cut it a hair small and then used the dremel to fine tune to hole.

St. Louis Lightning....... this setup seems to be what JL offers, only much cheaper. It looks like I'll be going to Lowes to get a dremel and some flexible hose. Thanks for the info !
