Unhappy Chip confusion!

Hi fellas,

Haven't posted anything in a while, and for good reason; I am totally confused in regards to chips! I think I hold a record on this board; I have owned 4 chips (1 Diablo, 2 single program Superchips and one Superchip Flipchip) for my truck and am still undecided on which one works the best.

Lastnight my buddy and I went back to Rockingham. It was 58 degrees and my buddy pulled off a 13.45 with a 5LB PULLEY, conservative SUPERCHIP by JDM Denso 22's and modified airbox.

I replaced my Denso IT 22's with IT20's and have a new flipchip from JDM. On the race program, I was only able to muster a 13.65. I pulled the Superchip and replaced it with my conservative Diablo and still ran a 13.65.

So I'm looking at several things. My truck has the fiberglass hood and tonneau cover, so I'm thinking that my truck weighs at least 200 pounds more than his. So the therory of one tenth per 100 pounds comes into play. I'm also wondering if the hotter plug slowed me down (which doesn't make sense) . When my truck hits third gear with the Superchip, it feels like I released a parachute. In addition, when the truck is going through second gear, there is a hesitation at about 3000 rpms. There is no hesitation with the Diablo.

My buddy's truck starts pulling on me at about 80mph, so that's why I'm thinking that my extra weight is becoming a factor (if in fact my truck is that much heavier). I guess I could take the cover off, but the truck looks so good with it, I don't want to take it off. It could be that he has a freak truck and I will have to mod more to keep up with him. Another supporting theory for the weight is that my truck has always dynoed more than his--typically 15-20hp more.

So some of you are probably asking why I keep changing chips. The only thing I don't like about the Diablo is the "hunting for a gear" that the truck goes through when going down a hill. None of the Superchips have ever done this, and they are very driver friendly, meaning they really don't do anything querky while driving around town. In addition, my buddy was able to outrun me with my Diablo at the top end so I thought I would give a Superchip a try. However, I have gotten the same results.

Conclusion:
A. He may just have a faster truck.
B. Regardless of the chip used, my weight may be offsetting any gains.
C. If the assumed weight is hurting me, may be time for 8lber.

Sorry If I have confused everyone. Now you know how I feel.

Cool Chips

Ron,

You know my chip and about 80% of time i dont feel any hunting for gears when letting off gas but when it does i usually have just put my foot down hard.
The truck seems to be doing less and less of gear hunting as i put more miles on or i am becoming use to it.
Sounds like you and Brad are having a ball and hope to join you soon.

My diablo has never "hunted". I have a FT valve body and the chip is not adding any line pressure or messing with shift duration in any way...

I also have the FT valve body and a Diablo chip with no trans line pressure tuning--it surges when you let off the throttle going downhill... it runs so much better that I'll tolerate it .

Hey Outnumbered, why don't you try swapping chips with your buddy? I guess this would eliminate the chip question...good luck.

Richo, I thought about that. However, he has the 5lb pulley whereas I have the 6. Probably should still try. The funny part about all this is that the pulley and chip that he has is my old set-up. I never ran that set-up at the track.

I guess you could call the chip tuner and ask if it would hurt to try it??? I can't see one pound of boost making that much difference? Good Luck!!!

Maybe your buddy snuck a little extra sumthin sumthin in his truck that you don't know about and is just getting kicks watching you pull your hair out over losing to him.

Thought about that, but he doesn't do anything without consulting me first.

Outnumbered, don't take this the wrong way, but you may want to let your buddy drive yours and see what it runs? You and he may have to 2 different driving styles. This has happened to me in the past when I would drive everything like I wanted to break it!!! My good friend drove my ford 427 tunnel port 68 GT Mustang a bit softer and went faster. Some cars/trucks respond differently....good luck!

Richo, I completely understand your point. However, we can have identical reaction times and 60' times--literally side by side up until the 1/8 mile mark and he slowly starts to pull. That's why I think it is due to weight. Thanks for the input though.

The mystery is solved! My buddy and I went and filled up with gas, and my suspicion was right! My truck weighs 152 pounds more than his. This should be partly responsible for the 1 1/2 tenths that he had on me. Next time at the track, I will be removing my cover and spare tire.
