Question Drop Shackle Basics

A 2001 Supercrew owner in my area was selling used rear 3" drop shackles on his weekend yard sale. Can't tell what brand they were and he was practically giving them away for the price of a six pack. I think I'll go with a 2" configuration on them.

Will these work on a 2002 HD? I'm betting yes, but want to make sure.

Is there anything I need to add/modify after adding the shackles? I read about some trucks having some vibration after the install.

I know cornering response will improve, but what about freeway driving? Will the ride stiffen up?

Sorry for the numerous questions.
Thanks!

Hey ChesterC,
They should work no problem. No modifications necesary after install. I went with the 2" BellTechs on mine and have had no vibration problems or anything. Once you install them and drive a little just check them though they should not need tightened again after installation.

I can't say I've noticed a whole lot of difference in cornering or suspension ride with the drop. The ride is pretty stiff to begin with.

It sure looks good when it's done though.

See ya on the 23rd!!

its a really easy mod to do. doesn't take that long once the truck is in the air. Some guys iwth the 02's notice some driveshaft vibration cuz the 2 piece drive shaft, but some dont. just put the new shackles in and see how it feels. if you notice a vibration, then just flip the shim around

anyway, are you sure they are 3" drop shackles? How do you know? Is it from measuring between the holes? if thats where ya got the measurement from, they are probably just 2" shackles. The holes are further than 2'' apart, cuz the shackles don't sit straight up and down. they are on an angle when they are installled, so they have to be longer than 2" to get you a full 2" vertical drop. I don't know of any companies that make 3" drop shackles, so this is why i'm asking.

how many holes does it have for positioning the top bolt?

goodluck, it'll look a million times better after the drop

chester, check out my gallery. I have some pics of the original shackles and the belltechs before installing them. Might give you an idea anyway. I don't feel any difference except I could notice the rear was lower the first few times I drove the truck. Handling stayed the same as far as I know. I probably didn't have the truck for a month before changing them out.

It has 2 top holes and I am not 100% sure if they are 3", cuz I'm basing it from what the owner told me. This is the first time I have seen/bought shackles. They could be just 2" drop shackles.

RickC, your pics look great and I like how you added the 02 stripes on your truck.

I'll be doing this next weekend and after reading the instructions from world and other sites, it seems to be pretty easy.

What are shims?

Shims are the wedge shaped metal plates that are under your rear spring pack. They rotate the rearend to correct the pinion angle. If you experience a slight vibration on take off after you install the shackle, you will need to reverse the stock shims...
