More Testing

Thought I would drop in and share the results of my latest vericom testing. My truck has a 6# lower pulley and Superchip (flip) and I have been getting some detonation at part throttle so I hung out on the Lightning board looking for help. I could eliminate the pinging by switching to the bad gas mode, but I wanted to find a way to run in the perf mode without detonation, at least part of the time. I previously have tried all available local fuels, 104+, and something made by Torco called Accelerator-Race Fuel Concentrate. All of these resulted in varying degrees of failure (still pinging). Then I found a thread on Toluene (and its cousin Xylene). It can be mixed with pump gas to create higher octane fuels as needed for your particular application. I mixed about 3 gallons in 1/2 a tank of fuel and the pinging stopped.
Toluene's octane rating is 114 and it is a component of gasoline, so I don't expect to run into issues with oxygen sensors, etc.
Anyway here's what I found. My previous best performance was a 13.66@104 (Vericom#), with most runs being in the 13.7 range.
The other night, with the help of some cold weather (35F) I turned a 13.41@106.5!!! I have never had trouble with tirespin before, now YIKES I can fry the tires. I could have run quicker, but I need more practise at the line. Just for laughs I did some 0-60 runs. Stock I was running about 5.7 seconds on the Vericom. After the chip, pulley and AF1 I was down to about 5.2. In the cold I did a 5.05 the first try, 5.01 the second and BINGO 4.99 the third try. There seems to be more than a few boosted HD's and Lightnings out there with part throttle deto problems, so I thought I would share this info. I also thought some of the guys in the hotter climates might be interested in the cold weather performance of our supercharged engines.

Terry,

In looking at your list of mod's, have you also replaced the spark plugs with some aftermarket units. As I understand it most tuners recommend using some colder plugs to help reduce the chance of detonation.

I am still using the stock plugs. When we did the mods to the truck it was still very new (2000 miles) and I was told by Mike (Mr Chips) that the plugs would probably be good for 8000 miles. I kept hearing what an ignorant job it was to change them, so I have not done it yet. I will probably follow your advise when I have to change them. BTW do you have a suggestion on what plugs to use? Also, I think my next step will be a cooler thermostat-maybe a 160, because I will park the truck when the snow flies. I understand that a cooler T-stat reduces deto. Oh yeah, that Toluene is GREAT stuff if you have a deto problem.

terrybean,

did you mix the toluene with premium gas or was it race fuel? how did you come up with the mixture ratio?

toluene is sovent that we use in our plastics manufacturing business so I have drums of it! this is great news and I will give it a try myself this wekend.

Terry,

As a suggestion for a plug, I believe that the Denso IT22 would be a good plug for a 6# pulley. Although, it would be best to talk with the person who programmed your chip for clarification. Here is a website that sells these plugs: http://www.lightningforceperformance...ps%20&%20Plugs

I mixed the Toluene with 92 octane pump gas at about a 20% ratio. Here's the calculation I was given for 2 gallons of Toluene to 10 gallons of pump 92.
(2 x 114) + (10 x 92) / 12 = 95.6 octane
I think you will be pleased with the results. The 92-Toluene mix is the first fuel I have tried that cured my part throttle pinging. Some people use Xylene, it has an even higher octane rating (120). Some think however it is too dry and mix a bit of oil in their fuel with it. Toluene however, is a major component of gasoline so I see no reason to add oil. There is an excellent article I found on the Lightning board on this. I will try and find it for. Lucky you, I wish I could just pick up a drum at the office.
Try this for a really good article on "Rocket Fuel"
