New Key Cut?

Guys, If I get another key, can I get it at Home Depot, Lowes, lockshop? Or, do I need to go to Ford? I've read here I can program it myself. H-D F-150 -- 2000 Thanks, ART

you can only get them from your ford dealer, or ebay and then get them cut. they must be a ford key, it can't be any other brand because it won't work. they keys have a chip in them, and it won't work without it. You can program them yourself though, it tells you how in the manual

There is some value in an ordinary key, especially if you don't have the keypad. Some carry one just to get in the door if they lock the coded key inside. A $2 ordinary key will work for this, just won't start the car.

I had one for my '98 scab which didn't have the keypad

WRONG! go to your local lockshop & have a key made.. mine only cost $7 bucks i think.. it's been so long ago.
they programmed it for me right there.. the new key has no emblem on it whatsoever..

now on the other hand, if you want the special HD/Ford key, you'll have to go to ford for it..

huh? maybe they have generic keys then with a chip in them. All i know is that when i went to get a spare set made at homedepot and a few other places they said they couldnt' do it cuz the computer chip.

thats about the same price though as a key from ford.

the key with the HD emblems on them is about 12 bucks. I've been meaning to pick on up

Wow, I thought you had to go to Ford for a key as well. Is this a key that starts the ignition? I thought the chip was special.

Like someone else said, you can have any key cut to get you in the door. In fact, if you received the knife you can get it cut but it will only get you in the door. I don't think you'd want that thing hanging off your ignition anyway

Wow, Clonetek, that's good to know. I think I will get a spare for my truck and my wife's 02 Expy now.

Good to hear you don't have to go to Ford and pay their ridiculous price for a key.

Thanks for the info!

Thumbs up

Clonetek is correct. You can get a new PATS key cut at most quality key shops for a minimum cost. You can then program the key yourself I believe. This link will show you how. I did not read the whole article, mainly because I don't need another key, so I don't care. But for you that are interested, enjoy.

Great info, BlownHarleyFord. Pretty easy process too if you have 2 programmed keys.

Another great reason to visit this site. So much valuable information shared by all.

see, i knew i wasn't totally wrong. it still needs to be a chip key i guess you can get generic ones now.

anyway, i found a set of HD keys on ebay (blanks) and since the 00's just got plain keys, i wanted to get a set. His bid started at 9.99 with no reserve, and is now up to 15 something, but i emailed him to see if i could just buy a key and not worry about bidding since he's probably got a bunch of keys. He emailed me back and said he's got a ton of HD blanks and he'll sell me ONE key for 60$ plus 5 shipping!! yes, not 6, 60 bucks!!! I told him he can shove those keys you know where I can get the HD blanks from a dealer for 12 bucks, but the dealer that has those is about an hour away and would have just been easier to pay a couple bucks more to get a set shipped here from the ebay guy, but for that price no way. LoL!

I'll probably get them from the same guy i got my extra emblems, headlights and taillights from.

$60 bucks!! He's out of his mind.

So, Josh, do you have to prove ownership to get the Harley blanks or will the dealer sell them to anyone? $12 isn't bad.

nope, just walk in and ask for one. They have to order them in bulk though i believe, but not totally sure on that one. since you already have a 02 HD, they may just be able to order you a single key in.

alot of dealers are getting lax on checking for vins also for buying HD parts. WIsh they were still as strick as they used to be to keep some of those knockoff's off the streets. Even though there's still ebay, it still wouldhelp

yeah, you have to have the chipped key for the PATS (passive anti theft system)
or
you can get a computer chip (PSP, SUPERCHIP, JDM, JL) & tell the tuner to turn PATS off in the computer. (and enjoy the tuning effects of a chip)

Umm....

Why not just buy the key from Ford for an extra 5 bucks? It comes with the Ford Emblem and HD emblem on either side like your stock keys and the chip comes programmed. Sometimes I think some of you all could be on "Ricki Lakes - My friend is a cheap ***" show. Did any of you see that episode? To each his own.
