Roll away or Hard?

I posted this topic on the beliner board before I got familiar with the site (especially with my fellow HD brethren), but I'd would like your opinions.

Pace Edwards makes an electric roll away bed cover for trucks

www.paceedwards.com

I have a grey truck, and I was trying to decide whether or not to use the Color Keyed hard tonneau or the black electric roll away (remote controled and it is below the rails). I like the look of both, but I think the roll away is a lot more practical (and pretty cool).

What do ya think?

I say hard fiberglass tonneau cuz they just look so much cooler. But the roll one is really nice too. But i have 2 trucks, so practicality isn't a big issue. I don't put anything big in the bed of the HD.

also, alot of tonneaus today are quick release, so they can be taken off in a matter of seconds if you need to haul something big.

just my .02$

good luck

Depends on your needs. I personally want a hard, color matched cover for mine. Thinking about the Leer or Innovations as they look really good.

The drawback to a hardcover is if you need to haul anything big you will need to remove the cover and it is a 2 man operation so the roll back would be more practical.

Either way you go, post some pics and let us know how it turns out.

I had the roll-n-loc on my last truck and I would not have taken anything for it. It looked fairly decent, (the automatic one looks even better because it's flush), and it was very functional.

But here is my take on it. I am getting the innovation cover if they don't give me any sh#$. I hear their customer service really sucks. The roll-n-loc or the automatic version, called the roll away I think, which is made by a different company than roll-n-loc, has to be fit to the bed. If you notice, our beds are 9" wider at the cab than at the tailgate. This creates the need to square it up and requires 4.5 inches of rail width at the front of the cabs. I don't like this for two reasons, you loose 9" at the front, sort of, and it just doesn't look good. So my choose, ON THIS TRUCK, is the hard cover.

Either will be a good choice however.

as for hard covers, has anybody seen a fibernetics? Its like a cross between a innovation and a snuglid. It covers the bedrails and all, is quick release, and has a smaller curved wing on the back. I think it looks better than the innovations. Paul (tzrider) with the boss orange L has one. I wonder if they make it for the screw.

if anybody wanted to see a pic, i can probably find one for ya and post it.

I'd go rollaway. Seems more pratical. You don't have to remove it to haul something tall.

They show a pic of one on a SuperCrew, but I still like the innovation better. The lip on the fibernetics doens't look as good to me.

A month ago I too was posting questions about these hard roll up covers. In the end I went with a solid Leer 700 series.

After I ordered the Leer, and be pure luck, I saw a few Supercew trucks with the hard roll up. Talk about Fugly. I was so, SO glad I didn't go with it. If this was a work truck I would consider it, but not for a truck that looks this nice the roll ups just kill it.

Is the Lightning bed longer than ours? Is it basically the same width from front to back?

Zinc, The lightning bed is a flareside like the 00 HD's and are 6 1/2 feet long. the 01 and 02 supercrew harley beds are wider and have a 5 1/2 foot long bed. The rollup looks better on the screws than the flares because the flareside bed, like said earlier, has a big difference in width from front to back.

but anyway, its just what you need as to what cover you get. Are you going to be carring alot of tall things? if yeah then get the rollup. its more practical. If you aren't, or only will once in a while, get a fiberglass tonneau. easy as that (yeah right )

Rick, here's pics of it on TZ's truck...

quick release

small wing. I'm not too fond of the big wing on the innovation. It just doesn't look right to me from some angles. I guess i'd have to see one in person to make up my mind.

The Fibernetics looks pretty good. I like the Innovations lid better.

What do you all with covers think about location of the lock? I would think on top you are exposed to a lot of water, etc, which would affect it over time.

I think the Leer 700 has the lock mounted on the back vertically.

Anyone know how the Innovation lock is mounted?

I also saw one that has a slam-lock (I think he called it). It was cool because you didn't need the key to close and lock. You just closed the lid and it locked. Do all the new ones have this feature?

Thanks for the help.

i believe the innovations has the double lock on top. Thats why i like mine so much, is its got a single lock in the back, and since its on the side and not the top, less chance of other keys scratching it, water leaking in, and just less work. And i just shut it and it locks. Don't have to use the key to lock it. I believe all Leers are this way.

here's the pic

Cool. I was leaning toward the Leer.

Someone said it was very heavy and had some quality and fit problems but I only heard that from one person and I guess that can happen with anything.

People i've talked to said they have'n't had any problems with the leer. Well, my friend had one issue, the front seal was too wide or something and they had to trim it, but other than that no.

good luck, let us know what turns out of it
