Looking for feedback on chips

Who out there has changed the chip on their 2002 Harleys? I hear Superchip is the way to go. Anybody got any idea what kind of power gain or ET reduction a chip can deliver? I have read the claims but I wonder what buyers think. Does the chip change alone have any effect on boost levels or is a pulley change required? I would like to find another 50hp and am wondering where to look.

Which ever one you go with, make sure they leave the transmission line pressure stock. Elevating Line Pressure with software is bad for the pump. Most chips try to shorten shift duration by raising line pressure, but it's the wrong way to do it.

Read this, about shift kits...

By the way, Power Surge is a pretty ood place to get a chip, too.

Terry, I just helped a guy install a 5lb lower and JDM chip on his 02 Harley. Prior to the install, we got a baseline of 310rwhp. Immediatley afterwards, we put the chip and pulley on and got 350rwhp.

For the most part, there isn't much that a chip can do to improve hp on it's own without raising timing and leaning air/fuel numbers. I know that some people claim 40hp with a chip, but that more than likely is by advancing timing by 20+ degrees and really leaning out the air/fuel numbers. However, couple a conservative programmed chip with some extra boost and you have a nice combination.

Don't get me wrong, chips are a great addition by themselves. They enhance shifting (although if you want really firm and safe shifts, Factory Tech's valve body is the way to go) and increase the overall performance capabilities of the truck--just not 50hp But on our supercharged motors, they work so much better with extra boost.

As far as which chip to use, everyone will have an opinion. There are characteristics of each that I like and dislike. However, I offer this. Go with whoever knows their product. More importantly, go with someone who knows your truck. As far as I'm concerened, $300 is a lot to pay for a chip, so you want someone who can address any concerns that you have, as well as remedy any problems; there are several tuners that can do this.

Good luck with your choice.

I just installed the JLP 6lb lower pulley, diablo chip, air box and new plugs last night. I was very well pleased with the differences.
I was afraid the chip might make the truck shift a little harder than I wanted, but if you drive normal, it still shifts very well, a little firmer, but still very smooth. It took about 4 hours to do the work. Have plenty of bandaids for changing the spark plugs, man they are a killer to change,. (OUCH)

Thumbs up Cool....

Ketchnu... This was very similar to the setup I planned on doing, Do you plan on doing any dyno runs? Have you done any pre-mod dyno runs as well? If so please post the numbers so I have something to go off here.. Thanks man and congrats on some awesome mods. The truck looks sweet too....

Hey Jeremy,
I do not plan on dyno runs at this time. The dyno shop is 1 block from my work, but its so damn hot and humid here, I know the numbers would not be as good as what I wanted. I will wait till the weather cools off. Too dang hot to take to track as well.
