Question Important Question

My and my fiancee are looking to get a 2002 Harley and we have been there looked at them sat in them, I have driven a lightning. We love the truck, BUT, My Uncle Works for a Ford Dealership in service and he was saying that they have been overheating when trying to pull.

Has anyone had this problem???? If you have what have you done to correct it? and How Expensive was the correction?

Thank you

-Ryan

I had that problem with mine, I towed my travel trailer (6000#) from Texas To Colorado and back, and it over heated on the way back... I put some "SUPER DOOPER HEAVY DUTY HIGH QUALITY" (ok ok ok, so I got it at walmart for $2.19 a gallonm but it still claims to be heavy duty) diesel coolant in her and now it tows fine.

I told a few other guys about that and they did it too and it works great.... go to Wally World and get the "SUPER TECH" antifreeze/collant. It works awesome!

I regularly tow a double jetski trailer. The trailer plus the jetski's top out around 3600-3800 pounds and I've never had a problem towing. We have a 5900 29ft hi-lo travel trailer bu I'am a little iffie on towing it as the tow limit on the 02's is 4500 pounds. I'll probably go ahead and tow if it's a short distance though.

Yeah, That is my concer. We have 2 Boats mine is a 1958 17' Biesemeyer Flatbottom, that isnt to heavy. But our other one is a 21' Jetdrive Ski Boat, that probably tops about 4000lbs with the trailer. the tow distance is about 330 miles one way.

If all I have to do is replace coolant than I have no problem with it.

I wouldn't complain about overheating problems if you are towing about the "towing capacity" If you really need to tow a lot...get an '01 because there tow ratings are 8000lbs, while the '02 are only 4500

We just got back from towing our 'scoots (yea yea, let's hear it!!) to Atlanta. 100' days, and no problems. Our 2001 is only rated at 4500 lbs, due to the tires, and there was that flap about the undersized radiators last year, but we haven't had problem 1. We're towing about 4000 lbs total payload.

OK, New Question, Same Topic.

Being that tow rating has been brought up and the difference between the '00 '01 '02 there is a difference of about 4000lbs

'00 rated at 8500lbs and the 01 02 rated at 4500 lbs.

What gives them the rating that they have? Is it suspension? As someone mentioned tires? and can I do anything to upgrade the Tow rating?

Thanks Again
-Ryan

I tow quite a bit with mine... 22' open trailer with the Mustang on it (~5000 lbs)--100 miles to the strip and back in 90 degree+ heat, 2 jetskiis and trailer (2500 lbs or so), 22' inboard ski boat on a tandem axle trailer (~4500 lbs), even pulled my Mustang in the 24' enclosed trailer with a load of other stuff--generator, coolers, luggage, etc... probably 7500 lbs altogether--over 300 miles, all with no problems. The key is keeping it out of the boost. No boost=no problems.
