severe rusting

I was under my 2002 HD with only 1300 miles and spotted a round fronted metal box that is totally rusted. It is located by front swaybar driver side. Does anybody know what this is? And should it be rusting like it is?

Also, In the brake area that connects the brakes to shocks are also severely rusted on both sides. Is this supposed to be like this?

As you can tell I know nothing about engines. All I know is that I love this truck, and if it is not supposed to be like this I want it fixed.

thanks

I griped about this when I got my truck, too. Go to the local paint store, pick up some stuff called OSPHO. Spray it on the rusted parts, then paint them. I did most of the underbody, plus my brake discs. Gonna get the inside of the exhaust pipes this weekend.

Not pump, steering gear. The pump is painted black and hiding behind a 6" pulley, very hard to see.

yup, thats normal. I've had it since day one too.

I painted my calipers about 2 months ago, and redid them a glossier silver about 2 weeks ago. I'm going to redo them again but with a little HD orange to match the pinstripe on the thin bracket part

I also painted the inside of exhaust tips 2 weeks ago. Holding up great and looks like new.
