Thumbs up MSD Stacker 8 Install on 01 (initial info)

Well, got off of work early and decided that two days in the box was long enough for the Stacker 8.

FIRST OFF MAJOR PROPS AND THANKS TO DB682 FOR HIS INSIGHT AND INFO.

Okay, started the install about 5:30 and finished about 9:15. First time doing anything to this truck other than the K&N air filter...strange to see coils on each plug, used to the 302. Anyhow here is the step by step I did which in my opinion was an EASY INSTALL!!!!

Disconnected the battery and proceeded to remove the fuse box from its place to see if the MSD would fit. It did. I removed the screws and fasteners that hold in place the routed wires coming from the CPU to the fuse box. All was going well until I realized that my MSD wires were not long enough to reach the CPU which is where I would tap into each coil negative lead.

So it took me about an hour to find a suitable place for the MSD unit (under the fuse box is great if the wires reach). In trying to get to the 10 mm bolt to disconnect the CPU I removed the battery and battery holder. Here is where I decided to bolt on the MSD unit; right next to CPU, I actually bolted the unit to the battery holder.

Next I tapped into each of the coils leads by the CPU, then into the positive lead on the front most coil on the passenger side (toughest wire I tapped). I then plugged everything back put all bolts and screws back and held my breath as I started the truck.

The truck came to life. Please keep in mind, I was in no hurry and was my first time looking for everything, if I had to do this again, it would take me about an hour so it is a pretty simple install.

RESULTS:
Right off the back I noticed and instant kick from a dead stop. A very noticeable kick. That was torque I felt, also the engine sounded like it had more of a growl.

I then floored it from a dead stop to see what would happen and man oh man it took off like never before. I also noticed that the truck now downshifts two gears instead of one when I am rolling and floor it to pass a car (don't know why as this should not affect the tranny program). It definitely likes the high RPM more.

Okay freeway. I had marked where I had been hitting 60 on my favorite on ramp and this time the digital readout read 67 at the same spot. The high RPM on this was unbelievable. It actually pulled faster (I was watching the tach) from 4,500-5,500 than it did from 3,500-4,500. Anyhow, it pulled all the way to 90 faster than I ever had. After I did my inital test, I slowed to 60 and then floored it. 70, 80, and 90 in no time!

Back on the street, if I just let off the break at a red light on a level surface the truck definitely wanted to move more than before, again more torque. Strange really, it started to feel more like my Mustang than a truck.

Anyhow, I will let the truck settle in over the first 500 miles as the computer relearns everything and then I will start reporting gas mileage improvements or deterioration. I will try to keep my foot from being too heavy so I can make a fair comparison on gasoline.

I got this from Summit for $300 I highly recommend this for the 00's and 01's.

Again thanks to DB682. If anyone has questions go ahead an post and I will try to answer. Will try to get pictures up of this as well as my mini Sharper Image fridge which looks cool in the back of the cab.

Forgot about that ROB. Guess i should have told you about extending the wires. Anyways sounds like you found a better place. The shorter the wire runs the better. (less ohm dropage). I thought about pulling the battery andmounting it under there but I was to lazy at the time. Gald to hear your happy. That makes two of us now. Whats next? Modding is addictive. youll see. FASTER FASTER FASTER. feed me speed!!! Get the chip! Youll love that also. Hows your nuckles? I screwed mine up undoing the CPU Harness. You probably got lucky having pulled the battery.

The fridge only runs off the battery when turned to cool or to heat. When I have nothing in there I leave it in the off position. I've never left it on with the truck off more than a few hours and I've never had a dead battery.

My knuckles are fine but I almost busted them on the CPU. Taking out the battery and the holder really help, not that time consuming either, 4 easy bolts plus the terminals.

Superchip is next, hopefully with my next paycheck.

Does anyone know what that little black box attached to the battery tray is? It is right up against the fender and has a black (looks like a ground) wire running into (out of) it. When I removed the battery tray (holder) I had to place this box up on the cowl while I did the mod.

SPEED SPEED SPEED!

MSD 7020

Its MSD 7020 but good luck. I tried to get another one for a friend of mine and summit said that they werent sure when they were gonna get anymore or if they would be getting more. I havent checked lately so they might have gotten some. Its well worth the money though. Shop around if summit doesnt have it. Me and Rob paid $295.50 for em. But ive seen them as high as $500.00. When I got mine a month ago they had 3 left. Rob got his shorty there after. He got lucky. Let me know if you find more for a good price. I need a couple but dont want to pay $500 ea.

Hey Db682,
What kind of improvemnt did you see on your 02 when you installed the stacker? Just looked at your web site and realize you have an 01......same question to you though.

Has anyone put a stacker on an 02?

I think it is one of the best mods ive done so far. improves pickup from the start, No more lag at high rpms, More torque more HP. VERY Good. I recommend it for 02. The 02 is supercharged and that means more fuel and air in the engine. More fuel means you need more spark and longer spark to ignite the fuel in the chamber completely. That was 1 of the main reasons I installed it because Im planning on a Kenne Belle or WhippleCharger in the near future. The supercharged engines come w/ a CPU program that creates a little better ignition but not much. I was the 1st on the board to do the stacker and I love it. I havent heard of anyone w/ a 02 installing 1 as of yet, But you should be the first. Besides order it through Summit and if you arent happy, which I bet youll be, return it. Just dont mangle the unit and tell them it doesnt work on your vehicle and they will refund your money no questions asked. That was another reason I did it. But Im happy.

Very cool. Should have mine Friday. I'm going to install it prior to the chip and pulley so I can get a good read on it, I'll let the board know. The dealer I bought it from said he had sold them to 30+ 02 owners and the customers have been raving about it. Said it makes the engine growl.

drop-top- Where did you purchase the #7020 unit? Summit Racing told me they're no longer available. I just got off the phone with Carlos at MSD Tech Service. He said, "the 7020 Stacker is no longer in production (discontinued) and a new model is being designed.

Need a little help. What color are the (-) coil wires, and where is the best place to tap in? Also, do I follow the diagram in the booklet for the order of the wires, it doesn't say what side is the drivers side, or does it even matter.

I found out why these were discontinued.......they did not work on GMs as thought, so they are revamping so that the one unit will work for ALL distributorless applications. RPM outlet has 3 or 4 left.......better hurry
