why does my a/c do this?

Why does my a/c, when on automatic, sometimes blow out of the defrost vents? Sometimes it blows out of the panel vents but sometimes it blows out of the defrost. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why it's doing it.. Is there a way to override it so it blows out of the panel?

A/C Venting

BigIke,

I believe that in your owners manual it talks about this "feature" of the Automatic A/C. Usually in humid environments moisture can build up inside your car and especially on your windshield. The A/C will cylce on the windshield vents first to help eliminate this moisture buildup and subsequent "fogging" of your windshield, then will switch to the front vents. If yours is not switching then something maybe wrong with the A/C control module.

I had this happen w/ my 01 HD. Are you using the cruise control when this happens? 2nd are you towing? I was told by Ford that the vacum tank was too small. Since the vents operate on vacum and default to the defrost when there is a lost of vaccum, you get the switching you are speaking of. If you rapidly increase your RPM the front vents will work again. The fix they offered was to install another vacum storage tank. My problem has only happened when towing a 3500lb boat. They tell me the manual says not to use the cruise control when towing. So nothing is being done by Ford

Harley #356,
Aren't all the HD's supercharged. I suppose the vortec supercharger would have much more boost though. I love all the goodies on the HD's. The interior is just as cool as the ext. I love the chrome accents inside. I have only looked at two up close. They were 02's. One was black and one was the new silver metallic. I wish I could afford one. Now I have a 99 f150 2wd. I would love to get a set of 20's for my truck and a billet grille. How many horses is the 5.4 sc rated at. That has got to be fun.

Silver&Blue, only the 02 HD's are supercharged, and his is a 01, and he got the s/c aftermarket. I have tons of pics in my gallery if ya wanna check out the difference between the 00 and 02's. BTW, 02's come in black and dark shadow gray, not silver metallic, just fyi. the 02's 5.4 s/c is rated at 340, but one person on here dynoed it and it appears that ford sandbagged the engine, and it really gets 380 HP!. the 00's and 01's 5.4 are rated at 260, but with the special exhaust that comes with the HD model, we probably pick up some more ponies. and yes they are fun, even w/o the s/c.
