New user 2002 HD
I purchased a 2002 HD a couple weeks ago.
- Gray
I have a few comments my last vehicle was a 2001 supercrew.
The 2002 has a lot of lean in the corners (i.e. especially freeway ramps at high speed) as did my 01 supercrew.
I am going to put on a hellwig rear anti-sway bar. This solved the problem nicely with my 2001 for around $130.
Also with a load (hauling dirt bikes) this stops a nasty shifting of the rear when hitting even small bumps.
I called edelborock to find about ISA shocks but they do not have a listing on them yet. I think the HD sits an inch lower than the regular model. (at least that is what it said on the sticker).
The HD trucks have separate part numbers for their shocks.
The brakes seem spongier than my other Super crew and I was wondering if it was different or just a heavier.
Any suggestions in this dept will be welcomed.
I have been trying to figure which intake filter kit to get. I have not figured out what is available yet. K&N has no listing for a FIPK kit for a supercharger. If any one has any suggestions let me know. Part # would be nice or a link to a pic.
I would like a pulley as the bottom end could use a little sprucing up. Is the lightning pulley smaller? I read something about 2 more pound boost.
Any sugestions on a chip will also be helpful.
My mileage is 13.6 mi. to gallon. I know when my other ford hit 10,000 mi. the mileage shot up 2 mi. gallon.
This is a great web sight, glad I found it.
I like my HD truck more now than when I bought it.

Hey Rad;
"I am going to put on a hellwig rear anti-sway bar. This solved the problem nicely with my 2001 for around $130. "
Part number 7621 (I believe it is the same for all F150's)- bolts up with little foolin' (must move the fuel/brake line clip on left side; be careful with placement on the left side of the axle-brake line mount). Cures major leaning- goes from battleship to destroyer still not a PT boat however.
"I called edelborock to find about ISA shocks but they do not have a listing on them yet."
Seen mixed reviews about these on the Lightning site. Instead get '01-'02 Lightning factory Bilstiens. Bolt right up- no problem w/lowered height or mounting bushings. (don't expand the rear's until they are on the bottom mounts- they come compressed-mount them on the bottom brackets, aim, cut the straps, and 'launch' right into the top brackets. On the fronts, fasten the lower bolts first and lower the wheel gently so that you use the vehicle weight to seat the top shock bushing, then tighten. Otherwise possible rattles in the mounts. PS. Get an air ratchet!!
"The brakes seem spongier than my other Super crew"
Don't know about other S/C but the fronts are differerent from the Lightning brakes (rears look the same). Will be $$$ to fix with Brembo's etc.
"I have been trying to figure which intake filter kit to get"
K&N filter panel from '01-'02 Lightning fits perfectly. I suspect all other filter mods for the current Lightning work. My experience- the filter panel produces the same increased 'blower whine' as the cone type filters and looks factory (less to tempt the no-warranty gods with); If you must, drill out the bottom of the air box to admit more air... save your money.

HD rumored to be less boost, however saw post with rear wheel HP of '02 HD pretty close to Lightning. Lightning guys seem to have more problems with plugs, detonation, melt down when they mess with the pulley (not to mention belt fit).

Different factory computer burn=new learning curve for tuners; I had problems with shift harshenss with my Lighting chip-BANGED into shifts. I can feel a little part throttle shift harshness now, can only believe a chip would make it worse-big drive shaft to magnify tremors.
The major perceived improvement from chips seems to be from the alteration of factory restraints on shift points, rev limits, and the cylinder drop out when shifting--holds shifts longer into powerband- shifts faster when shifts do occur.
More power from doctored fuel/air ratios up to a certain point is limited by the fuel that's available and amount of destruction you are willing to risk. I've seen dyno's on chipped trucks, and yes there is power increases but much of it sits above 3000 rpm and increases can vary depending on RPM point i.e. maybe you see a 10 HP gain @ 3000 RPM but only a 2 HP gain @ 3700 RPM (over stock or whatever program you are comparing). Most dyno tests can be shot full of holes--what someone sees in Ohio isn't transferable to California. (Temp, elevation, humidity, type of Dyno, what the guy had for lunch are all variables, plus the fact it's not YOUR TRUCK they are testing)
"My mileage is 13.6 mi. to gallon"
Last tank @ 800 mi was 12MPG- combo driving semi light foot.
I'm impressed with your restraint!
The above opinions do not necessarily reflect the views of the mangement!
