First trip to the strip with '02 HD!

Last night was TNT at our local 2000 ft elevation skating rink... err dragstrip. I towed my Cobra with the HD (it tows very well BTW) the 100 mile each way trip and let it cool down while I ran the snake. Just as the strip was closing I parked the snake and got the HD in the staging lanes just as they cut it off. Track was very cold (38 degrees) and traction had been non-existant all night. Anyway, I had never tried launching the truck and discovered a very important lesson--powerbraking with 20" tires on a slippery track is not too smart!!! I absolutely roasted the tires all thru 1st and it shifted into 2nd about 20 ft out moving forward about 15 mph and bogged big time . 60 ft was a horrific 2.7 sec. ET was 15.6 @ 92 mph. When the truck is better broken in (and more importantly when I learn how to drive it!) I think it will be a solid high 14 sec ride at our altitude... with more boost (upper and lower pulleys?), chip and filter I am hoping for mid-high 13's. Will keep you informed...

Slingshot,

You have GOT to hurry up and get a chip and pulley so we can find out what this truck will do!!!! Have you called any of the L tuners yet to see if they are able to work with your code?

From 2.7 to say 2.2 is four tenths of a second. Double that in a light car for the quarter and for a truck since you will be gaining more power with less effort once you move the beast I would say your truck is about 1.2 seconds quicker stock. 15.7 less 1.2, I would say you would be running 14.5 give or take a tenth. Not bad for a completely stock 5000 pound truck!

I'll run it again in 4 weeks... will practice launching before then! I have not contacted anyone except LightningPerformance--he has 3.5 lb pulley setup with matching chip and filter... since we are down a few pounds compared to the L's to begin with, I may try to get a little more--would like to end up with about 4 lbs more than a stock L. With ~400 rwhp, this truck should be a barrel of monkeys! It'll probably be a couple of months before I do that--next mod is a fiberglass lid, painted body color with custom flames to match the ones on the side. Had the front windows tinted Friday. BTW--you guys waiting on your trucks, go ahead and order your Bell Tech shackles--you're gonna need them. Trust me. Even with the 2" drop, it still sits 1 1/2" higher in the rear... looked like the *** was sticking up in the air stock. Best $50 you can spend on your truck.

I agree, I was happy that I pulled the shackles off my 01. I know I've said this before... this truck rocks!

Oh yeah, I was at my local ford dealer with a friend (she purchased a green Screw lariat) and saw the 02 in black for the first time. I think they should have put some other design on the black 02's. The flames don' t look as nice on the black. Also the flames on the black 02's are see thru with a little color around the edges.

I think if the tires were more than 'R' rated, it would have been better. 'They' threw on a lot of the original equipment from the Lightning, onto the new HD. Why not have the same tires as well?.....Still going to need good traction. Just like any vehicle, "practice makes perfect".

A mid 14sec would be about right for a new stock HD, I would say along with Alan there. But Hey. That's still damn good for a S-Crew.

I think if there's a different exhaust setup, there'll be a lot of extra ponies available. Weird how it bends around, side by side, then up over eachother, and back around, and out. That's gotta hurt the overall power numbers.

But still after checking it out this weekend, it's a real mean looking classy machine. Loving the interior. They sure went all out, making sure that nobody was confused that it's a Harley Davidson edition, with all of the advertising of the logo everywhere.

Slingshot or anyone that knows, Would the boost bypass kit have prevented the bog you experienced at the strip?

Pyro--Interesting site there... I just registered . I'm buds with Joe Lynch and Willie (01 Ram Air). If you see the truck or an electric green Cobra vert out cruising, give me a wave!

hey slingshot,
i have the same factory wheels and tires from the harley on my Lightning. I find the best way to launch on those tires is to
1. lower the p.s.i. to 18
2. spin the tires enough to see smoke coming from both rear tires
3. as the tree lights up, foot on brake, hold the revs to about 1000 rpms...
4. as the last yellow goes off, let brake go, as soon its rolling mash the accelerator.

I pulled of a 13.9 in the 1/4, with full weight, plus a cooler of ice in the back. hope this helps you since we now have basically the same engine.

Sure man, there not the best pics, i actually raised the rear 1" today, so now it is slightly higher in the rear.

Thanks, its looks pretty cool, but i think I like the L rims better on the L than the HD rims. but to each his own , anyway, the rear will look better raised a little, i thought it looked like it was squatting down in the rear a little, kinda like your about to launch it. What was your original drop before you raised it an inch in the rear?
