I Might Be the Happiest Guy Here Today

I don't mean to brag and even if I wanted, this wouldn't be the place. You guys have some truly beautiful machines. Just a quick tale.

A few weeks back I rented and F-150 to haul a few things. As you know, they are simply excellent. Shortly after, my wife actually said "I think you should get a truck." Whaaaaat? We have had a rough financial ride the last few years and this was the last thing I expected. She said it again - she wasn't foolin'. And you guys know - when the wife says something like that, you need to get on it.

I started looking and BAM! Out of nowhere I saw an ad for a 2006 HD model that had just arrived at a local dealership. Gorgeous and literally not a mark, not a scratch. Still had the new vehicle smell. And, hard to believe - 14,000 miles. Wow. For the heck of it, I've nosed around online and have yet to see a similar truck with mileage anywhere that low. Even the engine compartment looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. Carfax checked out clean - I was salivating.

Labor Day Weekend (Sunday) I was there early and as the sales guy (who, as it turns out, I used to work with at another Ford dealership) shows me the vehicle, he was acting kind of hesitant - as in "should we really be selling it at this price?" and even said if I didn't want it, he might buy it. Another guy from Pittsburgh (this is in Port Orchard WA) was on the phone, trying to cut a deal for it but wanted to lowball shipping so nothing had been signed. I didn't need to think -I said yes. Traded in a vehicle we had paid off for a new payment but who cares? It is beyond sweet. Last Sunday afternoon I drove it off the lot and parked it at the house.

The dealer had the salmon color decals taken off, replaced by chrome HD letters and the bed cover is big time cool. At this point it won't be a daily driver but used to get around town, ferry the kid and let the old man be cool. My wife now drives my Mazda CX-7 - that's a very neat car but not in the same universe as the F-150. And the clincher was it matches my Fatboy I picked up last year.

I think I'm beginning to see why $$ is an issue ... but why am I grinning so much? I sat in it last night maybe 30 minutes, laying back and watching the night sky through the sun roof. Had trouble sleeping because I knew I was meeting a buddy for lunch today and would be able to show off the new ride. I'm like a kid hoping for a pony at Christmas. Between the bike and the truck, lots of American metal in the garage tonight.

Like I said - no brag. But for right now, I might be the happiest guy in this forum ...
