Important Cover Issue- Lock
Just a quick update to all of those folks still waiting to take delivery of their cover. I contacted my Leer dealer today, as I was waiting for over three weeks for a lock from Leer. The dealer stated that the company who makes the locks that are keyed to your ignition is on strike. This means a further delay in installing the covers. I told my dealer to install a Leer lock as a temporary fix until the real lock arrives. There is no telling when the company will be back to work.
I actually thought the HD's came with the extra lock. Mine did and I don't even get the Leer cover, mines an 01.

The dealer cannot install a "Leer Lock"
the opening in the cover is for a FORD lock only. its a Ford lock cylinder.
Before that what happen to the original lock.
was the vehicle sold used. did the dealer take lock. where did the lock go. Did a customer on a test drive steel the lock. why were customers test driving vehicle. i never test drove my vehicle before I owned it, neither did anyone else. I just wonder. what else is missing!

I got to test drive mine and a 2001 before my decision. So someone could have easily taken the lock. WHy? Though, wouldn't do them any good. I recieved a lock for my cover when I purchased the truck.
Mine didn't come with the lock either. Apparently, when Ford took the Leer cover off the window sticker as an option, they didn't put the locks in the glove boxes anymore. Still waiting for my cover. Not getting until the end of July so they say.. ANYDAY NOW

My 00 is a Canadian truck--says Not for sale outside Canada, comes with DRLs and block heater- built end July 00, with no mention of a cover on the sticker(Dec was our notification of the cover deal, much later than the US guys) yet got the lock and the wiring harness. I suspect they put the locks on all the trucks since it would have been part of a parts build list. Then again, builds after end of July didn't get locks??
The lock was suppose too show up with the cover, but it was not there. The dealership used a lock from the covers that go on the Sport Tracks. Works perfect! Installer had to grind some metal off the lock plate otherwise a perfect fit.

Hi HD Folks!
I was just reading all this lock stuff and needed to tell you what happened to me.
When I took delivery of my 2000 model, the Dealer handed me a lock and told me it was meant for locking the bumper access hole to the spare tire. I just kept it in the console along with the trailer wiring harness, then in March, Ford sent me the fax-back form asking if I still wanted the Leer cover, and , did I still have the lock that was handed me way back last year? I replied YES, and when my tonneau arrived, it was denoted as "HARLEY 00 W/O LOCK 83PNFS" on the packing box. The installer used the lock which is keyed to the ignition key, and that is just fine by me.
Only problem now is, I don't have the lock for the spare tire. Until I read here about the labour probs with the lock supplier, I was wishing I had replied that I didn't have the lock so they'd provide one with the cover. Well, I'd likely still be waiting!
By the way, the cover is absolutely amazing!
The Ford dealer referred to it as the "Rolls-Royce" of any tonneaus he's seen.
And I'm very happy that it matches the Ertl model lines. Ford went top drawer on this!
Regards,
Fred

Its not there fault (the dealer) the whole issue over the cover and the locks was crazy the whole time. took 11 whole months to get cover and get installed. Does look great. Best looking cover out there. BAR NONE.
just some facts:
2001 come with the same lock in the glove box. WHY?
the hole for the lock in the cover is ment for a ford lock only.
just a note on something:
I have to close my cover with a polish cloth in my hand.
the cover closes just needs my hand on top to get it moving.
the overhead pull is great to pull it down but the struts will not let it get up enough speed to close, you have to grab the top and force it down. then I have to polish the finder prints off.
Fred: long time no hear! glad you like your cover. Have had the same reaction from the dealership that did the install and other tonneau owners--very good locking and very high quality. Hats off to Ford and Leer!
Harley: guess fingerprints are the price of black ownership
I usually use a clenched fist to do the final close--no prints, maybe a slight smudge. Sticking left side opening/closed has clered up with use. ck

Lock Update
Just got off the phone with the H-D F-150 Leer 800 number.
If a lock came with your truck you're in luck.
If not don't expect anything until late July or even into August.
Story goes like this:
Company producing locks is on strike.
Ford is getting only about 25/week
They need about 3,000 locks.
Ford is trying to contract with another company to produce the locks.

Finally got my lid installed yesterday. This thing is incredible! Wish it was a little more low profile, but still very impressed. I had the lock cylinder in the glove box. Leer dealer knew it was the right one immediately by sight, said I was one of the luckier ones. So is there a seperate lock available from dealer specifically for spare tire, and is it same as ignition key? Or did someone give Fred a line of crap? Just wonderin'.
Hi there!
I'm still waiting for my cover. Seems that the dealership didn't have a clue about anything. Do have my lock though. Hopefully won't have to wait much longer! By the way were any of you guys from Ont. driving down the 400 south of Barrie on Tuesday the 3rd?
Cindy.
